an amazing true dolphin/shark story

A friend of mine Donnie Voelker who is a photographer here on redbuble, has this very scary/wonderful story to tell, about a shark attack, and how 4 friendly dolphins saved his life. Here is his amazing story, as told by him, and I must confess it’s one of the most amazing stories I’ve ever heard, thank you Donnie for allowing me to share:

“When I was 17, I was on vacation with my cousins in Stone Harbor, NJ. While learning how to body surf in the ocean I could see my cousins on the beach all pointing and waving at me. At first I thought they were pointing a big wave coming but when I looked there was nothing there. All of a sudden something under the water hit me so hard it felt like a train from the force. I was pushed sideways about 10’. It hit me 2 more times and the touch felt like a cats tongue. I realized a shark was stalking me and panicked. I was too far out to swim back quick enough so I thought of the worst and then it got much scarier. 4 dorsal fins came up out of the water and I was getting hit again but more like nudges instead hits. After being hit so many times I realized the shore was much much closer. I finally touched the ocean floor with my feet and swam as hard as I could to shore. My Uncle who was watching on the beach said that he believes 4 Dolphins saved me from a dinner entree for a Shark. So in a way, I feel like I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for those 4 dolphins.”

tangalooma
by karin taylor

wild blue wonderland
where sky and ocean meet
no urgency beyond the tide
moon all lunar and starry eyed
my light and guide
dolphin magics me aside
abide abide within the night
turn all else aside aside
alight, abide, ride on
the wide blue swell tonight
I miss you

I recently spent a week on Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island, Australia, where the wild dolphins come in to feed every night and spend some time with the locals and the visitors who come to feed them. It’s magical…it’s healing…it’s special…I’ve never spent time in such a place as this, that’s meant so much to me. I love the dolphins. I miss them. Rani, Echo, Bessie, Bella, Nari, Phoenix, Storm, Shadow, Silhouette…see you again soon I hope xox

Thank you Ina, Chloe, Yuri and Jack for your wonderful insightful talks and assistance. You made our stay on Tangalooma a very enriching time, we were so enchanted by it all, we also loved Hamish, Doris, Bruce and the sugar gliders in the palm trees at night!
