coffee break —hmm one of my favourite pastimes!
how this began was a fascination with using the eye to see what’s there, and not just assuming anything. I set up a quaint cup of coffee in a china tea cup and saucer on the floor in the kitchen, and it was really interesting to find just where shadow and light are, it’s not as you’d think…just above where the liquid is an area of light, before going into shadow, then deeper shadow below the lip with a highlight on the rim…..unless you put in these subtle areas of light and shade, it doesn’t look right at all, it’s hard to discern that it’s a cup of coffee…so the tiniest details are sometimes the most important of all.
This is a mechanical pencil drawing on A3 acid free paper, the textures and writing are my own. I hope you like my little tribute to coffee. I’m a big coffee drinker, I wanted it to be something I could buy to give my girlfriends, for birthdays or just to say hi, or thanks….this seems to fit the bill for a whole range of occasions….the little butterflies are hand drawn and are a little afterthought to make it more special and quaint/dainty. After the drawings, i photographed and uploaded and painted using a wacom tablet and pen. I hand wrote the word coffee in many different languages on coffee stained paper (from an old school project book which on the flip side has a pencil portrait) as well as the names of a range of coffee drinks, ie latte, mocha, etc..there is also an overlay from the front cover of my old dance/ballet exercise instruction book, which is a lot worse for wear these days :)
