Legend of Princess Taisie of Rathlin Island

The girl’s name Taisie \
ta(i)-sie\ is of Irish origin. In legend, Taisie was a princess of Rathlin Island (rugged island) said to have been the most beautiful woman in the world with her dazzling blue eyes and long curling tresses.

Glentaise (one of nine glens) is said to be named after her – the Glen of the Princess Taisie – Taoibhgeal (of the bright cheeks).
More images of the area and information here

According to legend, Princess Taisie, the daughter of King Dorm of Rathlin Island. who was renowned for her great beauty, was bethrothed to Congal (an irish chief), heir to the Kingdom of Ireland. The king of Norway (a viking) also sought her hand in marriage, and when he arrived to claim his bride her wedding celebrations to Congal were underway. The King of Norway and his army tried to capture Taisie but he was killed in battle and his army fled empty handed.

More recent history deals with the arrival of the MacDonnell Clan from Scotland and even more recent is the fact that the first ever wireless message across a stretch of water was transmitted by Guglielmo Marconi from Ballycastle to Rathlin in 1898.

The folks who live in the area are particularly partial to sharing yarns about the faeries, it’s a place of true folkloric charm

Another wonderful work, Karin! She has a real twinkle in her eyes. Thanks for sharing the info, as well. Very interesting to hear the lore of other lands!

  • thanx so much Terence, twas wonderful finding this info, as i have a real fondness for folklore and tales such as these, i stumbled upon it, whilst searching for girls names that represented blue colours… Taisie really suited her, and after i read the description of the Princess I knew it was her :)
