May The Sun Always Shine

Original pencil drawing
Can you imagine if each one of us were given a garment the day we were born, and every tear, every achievement, every important event, every challenge, every overcoming, every victory, every sadness and every joy… were embroidered or sewn into it, like a tapestry of your life… it would be most splendid by the end, pearls for tears, diamonds for accomplishments, feathers for carefree moments, and it goes on and on….this is how my splendid dress developed into such a wealth of beads and beauty, by the end I’d left a beautiful legacy behind, and as I went along in life, I could look upon the garment and recall the journey of my life, and take in all that I’d achieved…and all that I’d endured… and I could think….you’ve done well…you’ve done well… you’ve helped others, you’ve grown and changed, you’ve been thoughtful, you felt pain and you suffered, but you overcame, is my dress which i visualised embroidered and embellished with my life, joys and sorrows… my life, my legacy, in a dress
O sew my tears into my dress of opulence
and regard them as splendour
add the moon and the stars
those diamonds in the sky
adorning my garments

I wore my joy upon my breast
and there a zebra finch came
to fashion his nest…
If i ever lost my way or
if I ever went astray
the embroidered dress would
guide my way
Silently it spoke of my life
in every living pearl
tho not blessed with brains
it held within it’s seams
precious memories in every
satiny thread.
Tho not blessed with breath
the dress had depth
tho not exposed to life’s hardships
it was worn in places
though not able to form friends
I loved the dress dearly and did
bond with it some ways

It gave me comfort, as it shared my burdens
and from it I drew strength, as I gathered
up my cotton and thread…..
I wove into it’s seams a token
from every joy, a trinket for every child,
a pearl for every blessing, a colour of the
rainbow for every wonder of nature,
a ray of sunshine for every act of kindness
and the dress endured beyond me,
like a traveller thru time…

She is ever so pretty. Love the colours and details in her dress and her lovely smile. She reminds me a bit of a gypsy fortune teller with the drapes in the back, the spiderwebs, roses and feathers and the ornaments on her dress.

  • aw, thank you! I think you’re right she’s got a bit of the gypsy about her, perhaps she’s a gypsy queen :) .. she is sporting a little rose tattoo on her shoulder too… x

Such beautiful colours here Karin and I loved reading about the ‘inspiration’…did you write this poem?

Yes an interesting concept wearing a garment for life. I suppose we don’t even wear our skin for life do we…because it is constantly changing and being renewed like all our other organs and their cells. Infact we aren’t the same body we came into this world with.

Tapestry of Life…would be very complex indeed. I think that people love making quilts because they sometimes attempt to capture some of their lives in it (memories)…eg. the party dress at age 5 or the special dress made by grandma, also a great way to recycle worn out things and preserve them.
Always a delight to view your work dear friend ~ Anni xxoxx

  • Hi Anni, thank you very much – yes, i wrote the poem :)
as i drew this, many words came to mind, and from them i fashioned a poem..i just jotted all the words as they came at different intervals down on the back of the paper where she’s drawn…and those words formed the poem for the most part….

Yes, it’s a similar idea to that of quilting.. exactly…i sometimes feel my life isn’t worthwhile, it helps me at those times, to visualise … this is just one way of seeing the ‘whole picture’ and that a bad moment, isn’t necessarily all there is…there is so much more :) x
