Happiest Moment #1

Happiest Moment #1: Well, I’ve been feeling a bit low lately, so this morning I was reading an article about the woman who wrote Eat, Pray, Love (Elizabeth Gilbert) and she keeps jars with “her happiest moment of each day” in them. So, thought I’d do the same and share them each day here and on FB. I already have a jar for our family’s achievements, which we bring out to read on New Year’s Eve as we contemplate the year behind us and the year ahead. So, I thought what a lovely way to live, to actually look for the moment we cherished each day the most, at the end of the day before sleep. Here is my first “happiest moment” of the day, from yesterday.

…..I was stroking my cat Basil’s soft fur on the top of his stubborn little head, to find it felt cool, soft and satiny. It was a surprise as he’s been so very ill and his fur has not felt nice to touch lately, having lost some of it’s condition. It lifted my spirit because I’ve been so worried for him lately, it gave me hope. It reminded me, how much joy he’s given me over the last 12 years and what a sweet quiet welcome presence he is in my life.

What an awesome way to treat each day. Well done dear Karin!!

  • Thanks so much John, it’s a good way of being mindful and grateful, I hope I’ll continue to do this all the way throughout the year :) ….then when I have a down day, I can look back at the ‘little things’ that mean the most. :)

What a lovely idea Karin! I am actually doing a ‘Best moments of 2014’ jar which my friend suggested to me. It sounds very much like your family achievement jar as you’re supposed to open it New Years day to remind yourself of what you’ve enjoyed/laughed at during the last year. I too have felt a little low lately…not sure why, perhaps it is the time of year? Hopefully those happy moments each day will keep both our spirits lifted. Much love to you xx

  • Oh that’s so lovely that you are doing this too Em, yes, I think I’ll be able to look at this jar’s contents also when I’m feeling low, as a reminder that it’s the little things that bring us the most joy, not always the big things we might be longing for, that we think will make us happy. I’m so sorry you too have been feeling low, I’m like you, there is nothing in particular, but just life wearing me down a little I guess and not sleeping adequately has an effect too I’m sure…..love to you too sweetie and my hope is, that you’re feeling happier soon :) xx

Karen, it is a true citizen of the universe who finds happiness in such basic appreciation.
And reading this I thought of our own cat, Scratch, who’s coming up to his 18th this year… I’m wondering what we will ever do without him and thinking that every minute of every hour of every day my appreciation of his contribution to our lives will make me smile.
So yeah, you are inspiration as we seek the positive in every situation possible. In addition to being a fabulous artist.
The universe is lucky to have you :-)

  • Thank you so much Billy, your kind words are always so uplifting and brought a little tear to my eye too, you are so very thoughtful and kind my friend. x

  • ps: Scratch sounds like a wonderful member of the family, they become such a part of us, it is hard to comtemplate this life without their dear little presences….so hard, so we do appreciate more and more, every little bit of warmth we have with them each day, each moment. :)

Oh I miss my kitty so much! So happy to hear his fur feels soft and satiny again!!! All the best Karin!

  • Oh Mel, I’m so sorry :( (big hugs) …it hurts so much, to lose these sweet quiet friends. It’s so hard to contemplate I might yet lose Basil…so hard to come to terms with. I’ve never had a cat that lived so long, the longest would have to have been around 5 years, so I think I thought Basil would just outlive me really. I never imagined my life without him. Thanks so much, fingers crossed he is over this difficult patch, but I am still unsure as he is troubled by another ailment and no one so far has worked out why or what’s going on yet. He’s lost a whole kg in weight in 3 months, had an abscess which was infected under his tongue and is pulling out large chunks of fur. I hope so much that this little improvement is a good sign. xx
