BOATS & BIRDS by Gregory and the Hawk

If you be my star
I’ll be your sky
you can hide underneath me and come out at night
when I turn jet black and you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine

but you can skyrocket away from me
and never come back if you find another galaxy
far from here with more room to fly
just leave me your stardust to remember you by

if you be my boat
I’ll be your sea
a depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity
ebbing and flowing and pushed by a breeze
I live to make you free
I live to make you free

but you can set sail to the west if you want to
and past the horizon till I can’t even see you
far from here where the beaches are wide
just leave me your wake to remember you by

if you be my star
I’ll be your sky
you can hide underneath me and come out at night
when I turn jet black and you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine

but you can skyrocket away from me
and never come back if you find another galaxy
far from here with more room to fly
just leave me your stardust to remember you by

Midnight Blues is from the Inspired Series by Karin Taylor, during the painting of this, i was strongly influenced by one of my favourite songs “Boats and Birds” by Gregory and the Hawke, as well as my favourite Australian artist, Brett Whitely, longing to capture something of the wonderful curves he created in his works. It has a dark and sombre feeling, much like how i was feeling at the time i created her. I used to laugh and carry on that my thoughts and my moods could ever be conveyed through a painting, and it was just silly that people reckoned they did so, but just look at me now….i cannot seem to prevent it happening these days!! lol…that’ll teach me to scoff :)

Midnight Blues belongs to the following groups:

Hair Mania, Music Inspired Art (M.I.A) music links/lyrics required, Sydney's Guide to Exhibitions and We Rock: Musical Instrument Art Available for sale as

Greeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints

i absolutely love that shade of blue for her top!! how’d you get it?? it’s glowing!!
and i love those lil checkered areas on the hair and skirt! (is it skirt?) n_n”

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

i got that shade of blue with a pastel chalk i was using and it may have come up even stronger and more enhanced on the computer screen…it’s like an electric blue and a purple put together….and it just sings. I think with the dark background it brings the colour out further. the checkered areas are actually fabric that has been glued on…..it’s like a skirt/blanket lying over her legs (flares) I’m so glad you like it fa :) it’s a special one to me

  • Liesl Yvette Wilson

    Liesl Yvette W...

Karen! Gorgeous work babes! I love how you have created that nice flow through the composition using the string or is it her silver cord connecting her soul???? or have I just read too much shirly McLaine?

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

aha, nice…i like what you said Liesl, thank you very much…...there is a lot of soul in it , so whatever you read into it will help me formulate what it all means in my own mind…i think there is a connection there, but i didn’t realise until you said it, and also when i was photographing her today i started to see this as well….......the eye of the photographer sees something a little different to the eye of the painter…..in my case anyways… lol :) thzx

  • Thomas Dodd

    Thomas Dodd

I love the VanGough type swirl pattern to her dress, her wonderfully large, limpid eyes which harken back to those 1960s portraits of kids (by Margaret Keane), and the overall haunting feel of his one.
    Very striking image!

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

aha, wonderfully insightful…..you are certainly switched on there Thomas, thanks for comments…yes, those artists you’ve mentioned are indeed very strong influences, i was born mid sixties and the large eyes and heads are a strong part of the tapestry of my dreamscapes

This is absolutely beautiful. I can sense the slight Brett Whitely influence but this is definitely unique. Well done. P. S How amazing are Whitely’s drawings of zoo animals!

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

...oh yeah, the hyena? and his birds, females, self portraits, wendy portraits, everything, everything of his….i love his beach ones and lavender bay ones…and seagullls and the birds nests he stuck on, even right down to the stuffed cats head he stuck on one of ‘em…i am yet to get to his studio in Sydney…we went there once but it was closed that day, gosh dangit! I feel a kindredness with him and wish i had known his tortured soul in some small way :)

There’s no ‘trying to sneak past me’ with patches in her hair and on her knee :o)
The wood colouring is so real that I am gonna ‘take’ her guitar when she aint lookin’ :o) How do you ‘do your magic’ of getting a painted guitar girl have EYE CONTACT with the viewer. She’s looking at me – I know she is :o) Cool KT :o)
Detail of even the little string holders (under her arm).
So she ‘fits’ inbetween the smallest insect and the big, wide world :o)

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

lol, oo i didn’t realise how sneaky i was :) you found them all… You always manage to uplift me with the power of your words….very powerful things are they!... i think she painted herself… so she was wanting to engage with her audience…..and she seems to have a mind of her own lol… thank you so much for noticing everything :) You could be a private eye you know!!! (Sherlock Holmes)!

Your style is quite amazing, very beautiful.

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

thank you so very much Daniel, I really enjoyed the process of painting this…it changed immensely over the time…but in the end, it decided how it should look… it seemed i was but an onlooker :)
