My song…. The Show (lenka)
This is where I began with my paintings .. 8 years ago, this is how they used to look … with a little enhancement in photoshop to add some little extras for fun. I hope you like it.
To show where I’ve come from, just doing ‘dots’ and ‘strokes’ and ‘criss-crosses’ for eyes, to the eyes I’m doing today.
My story – well…one day, a lady purchased a painting from me called Seashore Sally but she only had ‘dots’ for eyes and no other features, no nose, no lips (I didn’t know how to paint or draw them). The lady got in touch with her sister, a mutual friend, and asked through her, if i would try to add real eyes and a face. I was very anxious and nervous about doing a face over the top, as the lady had paid for the painting, but i agreed to try… this is when i began to progress and learn to draw eyes, noses and lips…and i’m still working hard on getting that right and improving .. i still struggle with lips and noses and eyes, but each time I am rewarded as I learn something new and keep on developing my style
i generally progressed from this, and prior to that, i drew some still lifes, such as a ceiling fan, a cluster of frangipanis and a few portraits of say John Lennon, and some ethnic families from National Geographic, so i began practicing and honing my skills using real subjects, prior to developing a style of my own, it was important to know i could draw first, and really draw accurately.

oh no, sorry i led you astray with that, it’s a piece i did in 2002, when i first started painting and drawing, it is just to show my progression through time, til now, and how i only ever used to do ‘dots’ for eyes, but now am learning to create whole faces with proper eyes, or more lifelike eyes :) sorry about that chrishy :) x

I really like your history on these images and how you have progressed. Very interesting to grow and learn like that isn’t it? I love that part of art. I have come pretty much full circle myself except I no longer do the kind of art that gets my hands dirty, only the digital kind now. ;o) Gorgeous work. I love the colors, pose and the character.
Karin Taylor
replied
Thanks very much Bunny – yes it’s good for me to
look fack now n then and take stick of things… It’s encouraging for me to see I’ve progressed and it just breeds more self confidence. I never would have started to draw were not for my husband encouraging me to take up something I
love for my own pleasure. I must really thank him again later :)

Hi Karin! I love the way your story of developing skill reveals the importance of NEEDS in the process. I guess that is the appeal of competitions, or when one is following a theme, or sees someone else’s work and is inspired to try something similar, and extend the boundaries of what you can achieve.
Rosalie Scanlon
