There's an Elephant in My Garden

There’s an Elephant in my Garden digitally colour version also available (click here)

A sepia drawing before I colour this work…. “there’s an elephant in my garden”
Inspired by my parents talk of topiary gardens in Tassie and their topiary teapot in the backyard and my little girl with the curl Sarah, who’s all growed up now (but this reminds me of her when she was a littlun)...thanx Nenek and Poppy….luv ya

There’s an Elephant in my Garden
a drawing on catridge from my Art Diary
digitally coloured
I hope that the grownups who look at this painting will remember something special from their childhood, some hopeful feeling, which will help them through today’s difficulties. There are all the colours of the rainbow in this piece, to remind us that there is always hope, no matter how hopeless it seems sometimes. The rainbow is a sign of hope.
Children See/Children Do powerful message for grownups
I hope that all the children who look at this painting will drift off into a faraway place in their imagination and feel wonderful for a while, especially if things are getting them down…and if life is wonderful, may this little picture add to the wonder and spark the imagination.

brilliant Karin! oh it’s better than the ones I used to get in my yard! I kid you not!! I used to have bad dreams for years about one or more escaped from the zoo and no matter how much I tried to ring for help none came example the phone wouldn’t work [in the dream] etc .. I did interpret the dreams finally and don’t get them now ! do you know how HARD it is to get an Elle to go home!!
Karin Taylor
replied
wow, what an interesting yet frustrating recurring dream to have had… glad it’s over now… i used to have a recurring dream of snakes in the house, and it was horrible. The one snake grew and grew til it was so huge that i was completely squashed and no room left in the house. A few years ago, i had yet another dream where i slew the snake with a sword in a fight to the death at the beach down on the sand… I felt I’d really dealt with it…and no more dreams of it either. I love dreams, they tell us so much about ourselves…thanx so much ginny :) xx

Pencil drawing – like pen and ink drawing – is in my mind – showing the shapes
and patterns which are the backbone of the painting. If one looks at the pencil drawings of Disney animators e.g. Bambi or Snow White – or Mickey Mouse in Fantasia – then the pencil drawings show off the skill of the animator a million times more than the finished cartoon film.
I am a ‘detail spotter’ and details that will fade with the intro of colour will be the stitches on the elephants umbrella and the ultra tight curl of hair above her shoulder. To be able to create tones and perspective in a pencil drawing – I would assume is much harder than in a colour work. JUST LOVE IT Karin !!
Karin Taylor

Hi gts…apologies for the length of time passed before i getting back to you, i too, love to see the work in it’s pure state prior to colouring, seeing the development of the characters through the pencil drawings is fascinating…..colour does give the drawing a whole different feel…i guess they become more like a full production and loose that raw edge….i love it when artists only part colour a work….to me, that’s perfection….left half done! But I can never bring myself to only half do…i almost ‘must’ complete in order to feel done with it…..some of the most beautiful works i’ve ever seen have only a faded touch of watercolour over sepia paper and ink and i find them the most attractive and desirable artworks of all. Thank you, I so appreciate your comments, they make me think and understand art from a new perspective, it’s really wonderful ! :)

Colin Cartwright
Ah, this is so cute. Kid’s illustrations, seem really popular – judging by the amount of comments for this genre. Do you ever sell them? Superb drawing, Karin.
And a nice description too. Aw, but it must be heartbreaking when they grow up.
Karin Taylor
replied
Hi Colin, I do sell quite a few prints of them, but don’t think i’ve ever sold an original drawing on it’s own. It’s hard when they grow up for sure, my daughter is getting her licence to drive today…yikes.. but it’s also a nice feeling… one just hopes they’ve imparted enough and that they are equipped for the big wide world :)
Micci Shannon
