Sunday

Original pencil drawing on Aquarelle Arches paper 56×76cm
Drawing 15 hours/painting 12 hours = 27 hours total
A digitally painted hand drawn artwork… the inspiration for this is “Meeting Places”...
As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company.
Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative.

It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself.

The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.

Sharon Mau
Brilliant work Karin, it is so beautiful! I love it. This is quite different from your other series. I love the appearance of warm light and the joey in the baby carriage. And the depth and dimension of the weaving of the carriage is wonderful as well. The landscape is fascinating. It seems iconic. Beautiful work sweetheart. I love her dress.
Karin Taylor
replied
thank you so much Sharon, yes, it is quite a bit different, a while back i did another ‘bush-inspired’ painting, painted it by hand, called hidden treasure where i was seeing these deep reds/pinks and wanting to give some feeling or sense of the Australian landscape and bush… i even painted my studio wall in that deep red…but this is only the 2nd time in 12 months i have used that palette…. i have tended to go for more pastel colours in between. I must say, i thoroughly enjoyed seeing the colours interplay and the results as it was coming along, and i just couldn’t wait to get it finished…i worked non-stop on it yesterday, colouring digitally from 8.30 am till 11.30 pm last night…with just a break for dinner and an hour in front of the tv and i’d worked on it …. it’s great to have it complete….the bush landscape is very iconic! :) x
Michael Scholl
Love this! The pencil is pretty great too.

Karin Taylor
replied
aw…. Cathleen…. thank you so much for your vote of confidence!!! :) x
Sarah ORourke
Wow i think this is your most polished work yet Karin! A definite shift in mood & colour from your recent work… is this to be the 1st in the “No place like home” series? I’m just amazed at the detail & your ability to translate reality into your own style without losing any authenticity. I wouldn’t have guessed Port Macquarie, the rich colours made me immediately think Central West but it’s stunning none the less!
And how cute are you?!!! Love the little curls on your forehead!
Xxx
Karin Taylor
replied
helloooo Sarah…. aw, i dunno about that….i don’t really ‘do’ series…. if i say it out loud it goes missing basically…. and that’s what happened 12 months ago…I talked out loud about my idea and i just couldn’t do it anymore… the excitement and stuff just diminished once I’d talked about it lol…
Yes, you are correct too, in that this is not the landscape of the more coastal Port Macquarie…a little more representative of a place called Tottenham out western NSW (near Peak Hill) where i once lived between the ages of 1 and 3…we walked everywhere there…but the church building is more rep of St Agnus’ ... the brick was red though, and my friend Mary-Anne Henshaw, who became one of the Teddy’s on Bananas in Pyjamas, (also was a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock) used to terrify us daily with her ghost stories, while we watched the windows of the church…(actually now i wonder if the church was St Josephs cos that was the name of the school attached)...but St agnes was the statue at the front with the long hair covering her naked body… ahhg… not sure now.
But anyway… we’d watch the church while enthralled in her storytelling…and we’d be terrified as we saw the shutters move… it didn’t help either that the church had blood splatters on the floor and the kneelers….. i thought many murders had been committed in there…lol…but later found out it was sparrows who’d got caught inside and battered themselves trying to get out…lol
I wanted the landscape to reflect rural Australia very much, so i tied in many ideas together…. i doubt that this will become a series, as the next idea i have is completely unrelated…although, you are right again in seeing this could definitely be the first in a series, if there ever was one coming about :) xxxx thanx for your lovely insightful comments Sarah, they/you mean a lot to me :) x
rain-dogs
beautiful work karin really love the bg tones sets the characters off so well….....little kookie is a winner as is joey and karin the animal carer….seems like the butterfly has found a friend 2…..the story with it makes a very complete piece of work…........fantastic on the card
Karin Taylor
replied
thank you so much rain-dogs…yesh!! little butterfly…of which there was only one…seems to have multiplied….i hope kookaburra doesn’t think it’s his next snack! I’m so happy you like it….i think this work would be the most representative by far of myself and family…obviously dad isn’t in the image…but i tend not to put men in…don’t ask me why…that’s a puzzle to me still. But anyway, someone mentioned and i think it was the lovely Sarah O’Rourke, that this doesn’t quite fit the landscape of coastal Port Macquarie, and she’s dead right…this is more the landscape of Tottenham, which is way out western NSW…and we walked everywhere then…so i’ve combined ideas and thoughts….I’m so glad you like it ;)
Helen Chierego
Karin, it looks so fabulous in colour! When I was looking at your sketch of this the other day – I thought that they were both children. Perhaps the crop gave me this impression-or maybe it was that the mother and the child have the same innocent eyes…in fact their innocence breaks my heart…it was a good creative decision to give them the Kookaburra to cast his watchful eyes over them and give them protection from anything that may disturb their perfect world.
I’ve used the Kookaburra in one of my images (Kookaburra Princess) and I see that bird as wise and protective. It was found in many products and images in the past-but maybe Australians found it a little kitsch. I am glad it is making a resurgence…Cheers Helen xox
Karin Taylor
replied
Holy mackerel Helen, i just adore that image Kookaburra Princess it’s etched in my mind whenever i think of you!! Another friend of mine who’s an artist here recently did a kookaburra too….. maybe they’re coming back into fashion! I think you are so right, kookaburra is keeping an eye out…and particularly for snakes me thinx… i love lizards…but i’m wary of snakes….you just never know with a snake…. i guess as long as you leave them alone, they leave you alone lol :)
I used to have lots of nightmares filled with snakes…then one day I slaughtered them on the beach with huge sword in a massive dream one night…and now the snake nightmares seem to stay away thank goodness :)
Helen Chierego
...one more thing. I always think of the writing of Tim Winton when I look at your art…family life, nostalgia…all good!

Amanda Cass
wow wow and wow stunning colours love all of it but love the little boys one eye and the kookaburra is so cute and the weaving looks fabulous, you digitally paint really well do you use a mouse to do all that ?? xx
Karin Taylor
replied
haha…yes and thank you very much Amanada….. I do actually use the mouse…i draw them first, then take a photo…then upload and work on them in photoshop…and my thumb and wrist feel like crying…from overstrain and overuse!! but it was well worth the effort and I love making the drawings come alive with colour…this was a bit experimental, i am learning as I go, but i was extremely happy and satisfied with the results…I used to spend 4-5 hours on a piece…and could almost upload daily, now it takes a lot more of my time, but it is more fulfilling for me to do the larger and more detailed works…so i guess i shall continue this way :)

The Magic Memories you have captured….the pram that was yours (loveingly restored by your grandfather after used by your Mum and 5 aunts and uncles, bet you didn’t know that!), the dreadful dust storms at Tottenham during the 13 years of drought, the lovely old church at Pt. Macquaarie, the gloves, the maternity smock, and so much more
This is a wonderous work of art, which I’m sure will evoke memories for many
especially today with the dust storms on the Coast as well as inland
So well worth all that time, love and effort!!!!!!!
Karin Taylor
replied
Aw hi mum…. And thanx so much…. Noooooo! I had no idea re the pram, if it really existed or was just my imagination!! Thx for clearing it up..x wow, what a history that old pram had!! I’ve been thinking about this picture for about 2 years now…It’s great to have it complete finally !!! Love k xxxxx
Jewd
You are so clever, this compostion is amazing, so layered and so much to see in little pockets..the palette is so harmonic too..realyy beautiful work bella x
Karin Taylor
replied
aw bella, i’m not clever at all, but thank you so much….it just takes time i guess that is the hardest part…finding enough time and then making up for it later with the washing, ironing, cooking…oh hum drum….all those other things piling up :) I’m so glad you really like it, you’re a sweetheart! xxx

lacitrouille
Amazing Karin, to see it all coloured, and with such bold contrats and deep colours. She’s beautifully pregant and so elegant. I love that I see only one eye of the little girl, the rays of light coming from the curch, and the animals. The basket weave patterns are fantastic. I also love it that your drawings have so much signifation. :)
Karin Taylor
replied
thx Josette, so glad you got to see it… i find out later that this pram did actually exist in my life, and it was handed down from my mum’s family…it nursed all my aunts and uncles on her side…and then me!! and i wasn’t sure if i’d just imagined the pram…or if it was real….good to find out it actually existed!! thx so very much for your lovely response :) xxx
Pip Gerard
to me she so looks like she could be your mother.
This is just wonderful… love the storytelling aspect and your words that go with it. xxoo
Pip Gerard
I dont think I worded that right… when I look at the lady in your drawing pushing the pram.. I see you and I definitely got the sense immediately that it was a portrayal of your mother. xx
Karin Taylor
replied
thx Pip… i understand,... and as I’m both mother and daughter….it’s a bit of everything…mum in there, myself in both of the chacters too… it’s all over the place and a bit non-specific as well as being representative of mother/daughter relationships in general…. i like the idea of the journey aspect too, all on a pilgrimage to a meeting place…this is for that challenge ‘the meeting place’ x
Lorna Gerard
Aaah Karin, adorable, and so much truth about life. xxxooo
Karin Taylor
replied
aw, thank you so much Lorna… xoxo
Jewd
oh I soo get that about the rest of life’s chores….it takes me up to 3 months to complete a painting, because I work large…we all need beneficiaries..or tattslotto..lol..xo
Karin Taylor
replied
oh yes!! wouldn’t it be simply wonderful to be sponsored!!!
now that would make up for so much time and energy… a little sponsor in the background, ever believing, organising shows for us…believing in us… spurring us on to more…. allowing us to be creative while they sort out the rest… i think they’re called ‘agents’ nowadays and they want to be paid…rather than paying us!!! lol … hugs xoxo

i was squealing when i saw the thumbnail of your pix yesterday, Karin!! you look so cute!! i love the vintage effect you applied to it!! =D
the first thing that caught my eyes for this piece is the mummy! she’s pretty! i love her sparkly eyes, and the dress!! i love the dress design and color!! it’s just the perfect shade of blue, i like it!
eheh.. i initially thought the child is a boy.. he kinda reminds me of ben.. must be the hair. hehe.. XD is that a baby kangaroo? i love the flower by the ear, makes her cuter! i especially love the cute little people and nuns on their way to the church.. they’re so cute!! very light peaceful piece of work.. i love the extra flowers on the left, the big ones.. gives a sense of motion.. love this, Karin! =D
Karin Taylor
replied
... taking me so long to get back to you Fa…so sorry…..and such a lovely long comment… thank you very much.
.. so sweet that you had that response, and that you like that shade of blue, it was the only colour that really suited apart from a rich red/brown, but there needed to be some contrast from the red dirt.
It does look boyish, but then my mum had my hair quite short when i was little…we lived in a very hot place so it was cooler for me and i used to get skin rashes./ ezcma.. so i think thats another reason for keeping it short. I grew it once i got to primary school and wore it in 2 pigtails or a ponytail lol
so happy you like it Fa .. hugs n glompz xxxx

Well seems like I’m the only person who hasn’t seen this yet. Geez this is the bomb Karin best work so far. Don’t get me wrong lassy all your work is outstanding absolutely brilliant… but like I said in my comment on your calender your work is developing and it is wonderful to watch you grow as an artist a real privelage. We as an audience are in the presence of a really fine artist. I read what you had to say on Pilgrims latest post and can understand a bit more about you now. PLEASE DON’T be afraid to shine let your soul come through your work there is so much inside you so much that you can bribghten up our lives with Karin.

I think your reply was so timely Cate, you stopped me dead in my tracks today, and as often happens…i just got very teary reading your words as they moved me so deeply…. right down where it matters at the heart of things, you see right into the soul…
I used to feel that people who explored their emotions through art were revealing a weakness…were being too open… and their vulnerability made me uneasy… and now, here i am, doing it myself. I hope i don’t make anyone uneasy…and to some it’s just a pretty picture…but oh…it goes sooooo much deeper :)
Thank you for so wonderfully affirming me this day, i feel so overwhelmed, everywhere i look there have been beautiful affirming words, friends around… just so far from the lonely old me that usually skulks around… haha… so i am enjoying immensely today, this moment… these words which so uplift my soul…
what a special girl, artist, friend you are Cate Townsend! and what a giant you are going to be in the art world… i can feel it xxxx

Very nicely done. With five new grand-babies in the last eight months, I’m somewhat biased to the subject. Your representation is wonderful.
