Love Beads

A little bit of nostalgia running through this drawing, with the good old love beads, i always love wearing love beads, and I still have some which are orange and lime … and another strand of blue and white. You can wear them so many different ways.

The image was drawn in pencil on cartridge paper in my A3 spiral bound art journal and after photographing I coloured her digitally on the computer. Before I took the photo I actually painted her ‘love beads’ with acrylics and inks…and i stuck a fimo flower on her beads, which i made for another application, and then painted it naples yellow with a white centre.

the love beads are spot on and just love the bg and hair contrast with those magnificent eyes and the bird as dave mentioned works a treat, the observer being observed..beautiful work karin

hehe… hey Sarah, if i see love beads i want them, there and then…whether i get them is another matter of course… but we don’t see them much around these parts… i must get out of this place and over to Byron Bay soon and check out the beads everywhere there… if i find some i’ll let you know! I have just done a wood background in preparation for a face on it…great minds Karin…lol…that aside, this is another of your absolutely wonderful personalities…she has panache for sure…the glove and beads are totally irresistible, and the strawberry blond hair and eyes are in total sync with the rest of her outfit…love the enquiring look from the bird…our lady is asking aren’t I beautiful?...I say…indisputably…yes…

wow, more synchronicity….the one i did a week or so back “Brand New Hairdo” had the similar timber look background, i really enjoy creating that effect… just with pencil and a rubber, amazing how that works. It was unintentional the first time, but i liked it and tried to reproduce a similar look again this time. aw, thank you so much Pippy… i have noticed a difference in my work lately, it’s been like evolving and coming through a dark tunnel out into the sunshine really, and i’ve mum and dad to thank for that as they took me on holiday in March i think it was to this island, Tangalooma, after some difficult circumstances i was facing…. it was that time there, that led to me picking up the pencil and paper and just simplifying it down to drawing again….i’ve never been happier … i think i’ve found what i’ve been looking for, a medium i’m extremely comfortable with, and one that gives me real joy… so it is, i am sticking with my pencil Pip… and the digital colouring is really what i love, much moreso than real paints it turns out. I guess that’s no good for exhibitions and the like, but as digital technology and art meet more and more…. i think galleries may be more open to prints and hopefully the art competitions will open their doors to this type of medium eventually also… i truly hope so :) xxx

Ooh yes Byron is full of beads! I usually make my own but these were such wonderful, bright colours & very inexpensive!!! They’re a little different to love beads… a little more of a “tribal cluster” feel… i’ll send you some photos :)Xxx

She is adorable Karin, so sweet, and I love the little bird. Did you know that some Galleries that are run by artists take this kind of work. I am a member here in Vic at Oakhill and there are no restrictions.Surely there must be some like that in NSW?

Hi Lorna, that’s good news, I probably could find galleries that would take the work, but i doubt that there are categories in many of the art comps…they seem to be pretty clear about it. It’s frustrating, as i can’t say i have an original of the work if you know what i mean? But, hope that in future they will start to accommodate more.. thanx for letting me know. It was more that i wanted to be able to enter them in comps.. but the ones i go in don’t allow it :(
