That’s amazing Karin. Simply amazing. What does Kokeshi mean? Is it a name or a description?
Karin Taylor
replied
Thx so much mobii!!
The answer to your question is – it means both!!
In this case I’ve used it as a pretty name
But ‘kokeshi’ are traditionally wooden Japanese dolls
With no arms or legs :) thank you, great question :)

lol lol lol, i just love the way you answered so seriously and sweetly about her arms, think i ask some silly questions sometimes, oops, sorry, she is adorable with or without arms, hope i didn’t offend you. Love Lorna xo
Karin Taylor
replied
lol, not silly at all Lorna…i often don’t paint in the hands and feet, and there are two answers really that are probably more honest, i have a little trouble with drawing hands and i like to draw my characters so they feel safe….ie, no protruding arms and legs…all snug like :) xxx

Hi Karin, The word kokeshi came into my head when I had seen the picture before the title.
I took a few photos of these Japanese dolls, but I like this one better :o) Its the iconic shape which you have captured and made your own :o)

So very clever Karin! This digital painting is very clever! And such a great card for a little girl! (Nostalgic, again!) I have a question for you! Why is the shadow on the mouse so much bigger than the shadow from kokeshi? Is he bigger than he looks?! :))
Karin Taylor
replied
Vicki, that’s such a lovely comment, thank you :)
no the shadow is just the dirty floor…not really shadow as such…i tried to give the figures some grounding so that they didn’t appear to be floating… if you look closer you can see the shadow is scratched in and smaller within that circle of grey stuff….so i really meant it just to be floor stuff…not really a large shadow, but it does look like that…and i guess incorrect in that sense :) artist licence hehe :)

You capture the essence of the simplicity and flowing shape of the kokeshi.
I have a little collection as I prob said before. They all have the brown hair and the ‘V’ neck design in their clothes and the long cylinder shaped body as you have depicted soooooooooo well. Even without your title – anyone who has visited or lives in Japan will know the subject you have reproduced so well.
A real slice of Japanese culture. Your muted colours add atmosphere to your artwork. ABFAB Karin :o)
Karin Taylor
replied 18 days ago
hi gts…thank you ever so much for your thoughtful response… and i feel you are so fortunate to have a little collection, i also have a couple…and one recently my son (who’s 12) shaped out of timber for me during his Japanese studies at school (on a lathe) it is beautifully shaped, very much like the above Kokeshi…but it is plain and unpainted, and you know what…i rather enjoy it like that…and i hope it never gets painted, as it’s most enjoyable to look at raw…. i just love the simple shape… i am truly fascinated by the culture and also that of ancient China…i recently saw Mao’s Last Dancer and it was wonderful…have you seen it yet? I loved every moment…. maybe you can take some photos of your kokeshi sometime…they might make lovely subjects in black and white photography or sepia? thank you again :)

The telepathy must be working cos as I read your reply – I thought – ‘note to self’ – must take a photo of these kokeshi.
Mine are not the expensive ones they are just cute. Purchased in the Meiji Shrine in Harajuku. I kept meaning to buy the ‘authentic’, hand made ones but never got round to it.
Q:Do you know how to spot the cheap from the authentic with kokeshi ?
A: Tip them upside down and you will see a makers mark – next to the mark there is another kanji which denotes ‘handmade’. They are the real collectibles cos they are craftsmanship not souvenir quality. Also the larger the doll the more expensive and authentic. I agree I like the unpainted ones too with their maple wood and dogwood to show the shades of the dolls clothes.
Ko = small and keshi = dolls. I learnt a little Japanese while I was there.
Kokeshi photos to follow :) Regards,:)
