Next in line is CHUNKIE China! ....a plasticine model I’ve also included lace a handmade fan which i painted..used silver twine to bind it together….some wool, thread, a lantern from another painting I’ve done in the past, some mesh for the background, and an ancient book that she sits upon….also some photoshopping….as China is an ancient land with a rich history…i really wanted this looking aged…in the end I was really happy with the results.

Once the Chunkies are created and photographed, I usually dismantle them to be used in the creation of more chunkies, so I am recycling the plasticine. These Chunkies have been very therapeutic to create over the holidays, whilst taking a break from red bubble and having my family around. I have many more to come, and although I won’t be on RB as much, I hope to also be doing some serious painting this year…so i look forward 2009 with much anticipation …

CHUNKIE China belongs to the following groups:

Animation Domination, Art of the Doll, Artists of the Orient, Childhood, Miniatures and Mammoths, Mixed Media and Woman Appreciation Available for sale as

Greeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints, Framed Prints and Posters

  • Cathleen Tarawhiti

    Cathleen Taraw...

...and your backdrops are great – what do you use for them?

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

    aw thank you
here i’ve used a roll of straw mesh over the top of an ancient vintage book of paintings given to me by my grandmother – and that is also what she’s sitting on, then I’ve altered the backdrop and the dolls’s colours using photoshop. The doll’s dress is actually ‘royal blue’ and the reeds are less vibrant in reality….so glad you like her Cathleen…

The other CHUNKIES have similarly styled backdrops, and I’ve just added changes to them in photoshop mainly. CHUNKIES in love was added to from the garden, with frangipanis, leaves and a few little flowers from my next door neighbour!

The flowers in CHUNKIE Geisha turn out to be just one flower in reality, reused over and over…thank goodness for photoshop… :) lol

    Marion Cullen

Fabulous Karin, she is beautiful. Where do you find all the lovely little details like lantern, fan, trimmings etc or do you make them too?

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

thank you Marion! glad you like her….
the lantern is nicked from Lotus Love
the fan, i made it myself…a little bit of white paper…folded back and forth….and painted with inks…bound with silver thread
the other ornaments are a ball chain and the rest are ribbons i’ve collected, golden elastic from spotlight i found in the drawer, and just plasticine rolled, and/or molded…her body is a little vase, around which i wrapped the plasticine….i fished around in my fabric drawer for the background mesh…and used an ancient book of paintings for her to stand on…i make a little studio with lighting and all to photograph..and learning to keep the camera very very still is my biggest hurdle really…they are great fun Marion! Plasticine rules :) xx

  • Karen Cook

    Karen Cook

Ahhhh adorable Kaz!!!!!!!!!!!! I was going to ask about all the finer details, like the fan and lantern, but discovered the answers when I scrolled through all the other comments! Do you actually sketch them first, so that you know ‘exactly’ what you’re going to create, or do you fly by the seat of your pants and just ‘create’ and see what you come up with?!! x

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

Oh wow hi kaz and a big thx for the lovely comments and fave!
Well, I don’t sketch them first .. I just imagine them .. Then I make
Some notes about what I’ve imagined .. And from there I usually look
To make a blank head and torso .. While ok doing that I’m thinking about
The hair and the makeup .. And how I can make each character a bit
Special, a bit loveable, and believable/authentic.. I try to put on something traditional and mix it with a contemporary appeal. .. They are very enjoyable projects tho , even if I miss the mark I’ve so enjoyed the process
And the chAllenge of doing something so different from drawing and painting :)))))) xxxxx. You latest images have been so beautiful by the way lax, you certainly haven’t lost your touch or your mojo !!! :)))

  • Christine Jones

    Christine Jones

another amazing Chunkie! thanks for sharing your techniques, it makes them even more special somehow. A new calendar series perhaps?? Definitely needs to be an animated series.

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

hi chris, thank you!! You know I had to blow dry the ink ok the fan and it blew away into thin air … I lost it .. It blew outa my hand and down behind a cupboard, I was searching for it every where and non too happy tip I relocated it!! Lots of swearing under breath involved in that incident but shhhh don’t tell anyone LOL :))

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

oh yes, i do have enough for a calendar..but it maybe too late for this year…we’ll have to see, i don’t wanna load them up too quickly, all the others still need photoshopping work done first.. but i made another one today which i am very excited about….perhaps i will do some more…the studio looks like a cyclone hit :)
