Summer Heat is a mixed media production on Canson Me-Teintes textured pastel/mixed media paper…. being December in Australia we are experiencing some very warm weather, today the beach was at it’s most gorgeous, this painting is inspired by the sultry salty warm days by the beach we love at this time of year, and the beautiful hues of the water when it’s still like a milk pond as it was this morning :)

In the background is an icecream van set up by the beach, which has caught the little one’s eye and she’s waving to the vendor.

I’ve used pastels and charcoal, both white and black varieties, as well as pencil and black Faber Castelle markers

The original work is available unframed for $220, but it is not so bright and in softer hues… this piece has been enhanced a bit in photoshop

Your sense of colour is truly marvellous. Only yesterday I was contemplating the fact that whilst red is a dominant colour, it can be used successfully in the background if it is sufficiently subdued and here you are, proving that is true.

thx so much Dave, i don’t plan colour much at all…just begin somewhere, and work my way through the painting….i just go by intuition and what ‘feels’ right at the time, but i’m so happy that i’ve used the red successfully in the background…lol….i feel very pleased about it indeed!! :)

The children are keeping COOL in the water, and wave towards the COOL ice-cream van – a wonderfully symbolic use of cool-blue colour. Just the use of color-language I would love sharing with my Photoshop students. So good Karin – this should do well!

thank you very much Keith, i just work by intuition with colour, nothing was planned here, apart from the initial drawing, once i begin with one colour, the rest just follows i guess. Here i began with the stripes in the big girls costume and the rest followed…the blue seemed necessary for the van to balance the blue of the water…i like how you described it…it makes me sound as if i know a thing or two about colour, but really i have no idea at all :)

I spent some time at the beach on Saturday, even dipped the toes….it was glorious! I’ve missed it so much, and these colours are just SO right!!

...i know the feeling Mel…away from RB, the beach is the place i call home :) where i am happiest…. doesn’t it make such a difference, even just to dip your toes…!! I played with this in photoshop and ended up getting the blues up in the aqua sphere…(they are really more of a darker blue, and the oranges are more of a true yellow in the original work) but these colours just worked better for me….more saturation seems to work for this….i am fascinated by the textures….i played around with a big wad of charcoal, dragging it over the pastels…and it gave it the raw timber like feel…o what fun I had playing today ;)

This is gorgeous- The colours really give a steamy heat feel and the bright sun in their hair (very clever).
Reminds me of when the ice cream van used to come and we’d race to be first in the queue.

and I missed this how….........Oh myabe you are trying to make me jealous that you have the summer now and I have to be in the cold climate,,,,,,,,especially since we moved to the desert…...Did you know it is a dry cold….just like in the summer it is a dry heat here in Arizona..
