YAY!! the Original Version!! Love it, Karin!! it’s so interesting to know how the white areas came about.. That’s gesso, right? =D
Karin Taylor
replied
Hi fa…it was funny how that happened..
I’ve seen another artist who does portraits over the top of this type of rough paint work ….and it has always fascinated me….. one day – not long ago…i was waiting for work to upload and Scott to print things off on the giclee machine…and getting restless waiting to get back on the computer….so i tore off brown paper from a huge roll and began cutting it into pieces and folding in half…i then got a syringe full of white acrylic gesso filled it and started squirting onto the paper, and came up with shapes by folding the paper…i don’t quite know how it came about…but i then got a large brush and just started fooling around, and laid down some white paint strips horizontally…then i liked how ‘raw’ it looked…and thought …hmm once this is dry i’m gonna try to draw over the top and see what happens…. because the paint dries so fast being acrylic…and i love gesso…because of it’s chalky grip…i just went straight ahead, and was very surprised how nicely my new black felt tip pens ran over the surface….not catching….and i enjoyed the process so much…i found i could simply draw freehand from my brain to my hand, without even a pencil drawing underneath at times…and it really appeals to me being able to do a fast piece and then fill in with just a little pastel afterwards….
the brown paper gives the skin such a wonderful warm tone…there is very little else for me to do…except cut it out in photoshop and apply the different ways for cards and tshirts…..so there it is in a nutshell….it just came about….there was no thought behind it, just a feverishly bored moment which if I hadn’t have had to wait and be stuck and bored, would never ever ever have eventuated in a million trillion years!!! lol

This is fantastic and I love hearing how this creative piece of art came about….:)

COOL!!!! love reading how you first started off with this style, Karin!! it’s so spontaneous! now i can’t wait to go over and see the original piece.. i wanna look at it up close and see the details.. how your marker move above the gesso.. it’s so interesting to know that it runs smoothly!! =D
Karin Taylor
replied
lol..thx fa…i think i babbled on about it to you another time…
but when you see the original it’s weird as it can’t be framed…
due to it just being on scrappy brown paper….not used to doing things like that!! :D
