Forgotten Beach (Byron Bay) – Robert James
I made this sculpture
on Wategos Beach Byron Bay
not another soul around
to give you an idea of the scale of the sculpture
most of the stones were the size of your palm
some twice that size and some smaller
I had noticed large piles of beautiful stones behind me
began to create something out of them
intuitively, one stone at a time
The song that really speaks for this piece is Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins – click to see lyrics this was our signature song….along with Livin’ on an Island by Status Quo and of course 10CC’s Sunburn

very pretty!
Karin Taylor
replied
Hi Joan, and thank you :)
Mui-Ling Teh
Nice sculpture Karin! So if most of those rocks are about the size of my palm I’m guessing that star is about…3m wide? Although I don’t know which stones in here are the palm sized ones you were refering to.
Karin Taylor
replied
Hi Mui-Ling,
the sculpture would have been approx 2 and a half metres
the larger stones were placed in the centre, and i worked out from there
getting smaller and smaller stones toward the ends of the tendrils
my husband had to take the photo as i am too short to get it in the frame
Karin Taylor
replied
....if you look at the enlargement, you can see two of my foot impressions in the sand, on the right hand side, around 3 o’clock and 5 o’clock marks…lol
thanks for your comments and i’m glad you like it :)
BubbleDoll
lovely! (^^)
Marion Cullen

Karin Taylor
replied
Hi Lumineux, thanks very much
this will probably be the only photo you’ll see from me tho
it was just that i thought it went nicely with my Beach Series :)
CateTownsend
It just goes to show as an artist we shouldn’t limit ourselves art is all around us. This is a beautiful example of that….. a lovely image of the sculpure that you created. When I go to the beach which is a lot lol I’m always taking photos down on my knees looking into crevases I really don’t know what people are thinking but what the heck who cares.
Karin Taylor
replied
thanks so much for your wonderful encouragement Cate….
i think it’s so funny, like, as you say, why the hell should we care what anyone thinks!!! gosh, ya gotta live :)
i made foot and toe impressions in the sand one day and sketched for hours, it was very cathartic and i produced a wonderful sketch i was proud of…..although when i show it to people they have absolutely no idea what it is!!!! lol

Lovely Karin! Have you seen Andy Goldsworthy”s sculptures? You might like them.
Karin Taylor
replied
thanks so much, no i haven’t, i’ve only seen David Sandercoe’s sand sculptures and another guy at Byron does beautiful fairy castles sculptures in the sand and then puts tealights in the windows at night, they’re so beautiful and magical…..i will check out Andy Goldsworthy now, thx :)
Carlos Solorza
i love this sculpture you created Karin. it’s beautiful
Karin Taylor
replied
Hi Carlos, i’m really glad you like it, thank you so much :)
Mui-Ling Teh
lol; thanks for pointing that out; your footprint kind of blends nicely there though. I remember when I was trying to shoot my “Snowdune” photo, I wanted to avoid making footprints as much as possible.
Karin Taylor
replied
yes, it’s hard to keep them out… i tried to sweep them out, but it wrecks the surface texture elsewhere….i like them in there as it helps me remember i was actually there :)
Steven Agius
Excellent looking sculpture, I bet this took awhile to do Karin, well done.

and wow.. 2.5m wide.. and all those pretty stones.. man.. did you take more shots of it? it’s really pretty.. heck if i’m there, i’d make the whole family take pic with it!! hehe.. XD
Karin Taylor
replied
hi sweet lil fa…well it’s a funny story
i didn’t take the photo, Scott did…..but i created the sculpture and photoshopped the photo, creating the layer and shadowing etc.
at the time i created it, i was just ‘in the moment’ completely blissful and absorbed in what i was doing….my family came out of the water, and we prepared to go home…..but Scott said, just before we go, i think we should take a photo…i didn’t want to…feeling all embarrassed…..but i’m glad he did now. I only found it today, and thought i could maybe play around with it and make something nice from it…... :)
so, no…...no-one else even thought to get in the picture! and this is the only photo i have…..

Beautiful, think taking natures own pearls and making them in to such a gem , well done Paul :))
Karin Taylor
replied
thx Paul..it was one of those magic days…where the air seems stifling and you wonder what will happen…...and next minute you’re doing something completely unexpected and creative with whatever happens to be at your fingertips..in this case a large piles of stones at the beach :)
blamo
shows how you are creative even when lazing karin …......... martha and the muffins a very under rated band some of there albums are tops good to hear your choons Too
Karin Taylor
replied
Hey there blamo…yes, no matter what’s happening the creativity finds a way to express itself… when there was no time, when my Sarah was little…i would instead create braids in her hair…or much to my shame…i painted the faces of her dolls…for which she refuses to forgive me…I even went as far as to create an outfit and hat for “Hamble” her dolly…out of garbage bag material…. hehe….no matter what happens or where i am, always the best therapy is to let the creative intincts take over and then I feel ‘me’ rather than an alien LOL

Karin Taylor
replied
Martha and the Muffins…...so cool….
Echo beach was our theme song…...
we would listen to it endlessly over and over….
memories just flood my mind whenever i listen to it and i feel a sense of excitement over yesterday :)
blamo
hahaha love the story about the doll painting.you should create something round it ….......
Karin Taylor
replied
lol..yes..there could be a “Pinocchio” type story in that…..
creating the faces on the dolls…and them coming to life…
Rebecca May

Greg Roberts
Its a work of art Karin :)
Did it get washed away? :)
Karin Taylor
replied
...thank you Greg, i actually don’t know what happened to the sculpture, someone may have dismantled it, as it doesn’t appear to be there any more….i hope i didn’t upset anyone or the beach environment by moving the stones in the first place… but they were far away from the water’s edge…..in the photo i’ve duplicated the stones and applied a graphic pen filter…....and distorted it to make it look like the water is washing up over it….a first attempt at photo manipulation ;)
red addiction
Did you create that? It’s gorgeous!!! You blow my mind girl!!! You rock!
Karin Taylor
replied
lol, yep i did marlo :)
on an overcast day…just followed the kids and hubby to the beach…was in a daydream…and it occurred to me that i could do something with those stones over yonder, perhaps….i couldn’t stop once i started…it was really strange and mesmerising, it’s the only sculpture of it’s kind that i have ever done….it’s like, on that day, those stones conspired to draw me to them, and create a seastar….surreal :)
red addiction
It’s perfect!!
Karin Taylor
replied
thank yooooooooooooooooooooooooooo red :) xxxx
