Dolphin Dancer

Dolphin Dance – original available
from the Beach and Friends Series by Karin Taylor
The original painting is mixed media on canvas textured paper

Dolphin Dancer is a radiant native girl in her grass skirt doing a special hula improvisation with ukelele strapped to her back (for a later session by the fire on the beach with friends)

...she wears hibiscus in her hair, and dances on dusk, calling for dolphins to come in to the shore and play, a dragonfly hovers nearby….she wears a lai of island flowers about her neck and her movements are soft, sweet and subtle, as the dolphins draw nearer and nearer with each wave rolling in

...the surf a midnight blue under the starlit sky, the air kisses her skin softly and all is well in the cosmos

This brings back some nice memories; I worked in Hayama; which is very much like the Hawaii of Japan. The town is well known for the sea, and my landlady had a friend who does Hawaiian dances. I had the opportunity to see her perform twice; first at a shrine during an arts festival, the second at the beach!

  • Karin Taylorcommunity helper replied

oh wow!! it is lovely to hear this, that somehow this image can bring back memories for you :) I absolutely adore all things hawaiian, tahitian, other cultures, hippydom, asian, indonesian, etc…. have you ever read James Michener’s book ‘Hawaii’, it’s a wonderful novel all about the history and how it all came to be, how the islands came into existence, how it became populated and integrated with many peoples from other regions….definitely the best book i’ve ever read :)
I am off to look up Hayama right now :)
    What did you do there/workwise?
    Was it beautiful :)

Hmm I’ve never read that book before…

In Hayama I was doing an internship in a wonderful little architecture office. Started making a lot of physical models there, then did some drawings and graphics, and towards the end I helped to translate their homepage. If you ever feel like it, feel free to have a look: http://www.mariodelmare.com/

At the top you’ll find somewhere that sat “Enter English”: these are the pages I translates. The grammer is not perfect though; I do know English and Japanese but my mind often got boggled because the sentence structure in English and Japanese are very different. If I had more time, I would read over my translations and try to to make them easier to understand.

Hayama is very beautiful, and is well know for its sea and green hills (“Hayama” literally means “leaf mountain” in Japanese). On my last day of work the staff took me to the beach and we had dinner there while watching the sunset over Mt. Fuji and Enoshima. I took several photos that day, which I have posted here in redbubble; there was lots of nice scenery in Hayama. Afterwards we played with fireworks, and they gave me farewell presents. It was a very special period of my life and I miss it dearly.

i saw the pix on your bubble of Hayama, i love the trees on the rocks
they are wonderful, thank you for sharing this with me Mui-Ling
as I find it all so interesting :)

okay I apparently have a lot of typos in that comment, so here it is again; I wish redbubble had an edit button… (and maybe you’d like to delete the previous one as its taking up space :P):
