...WAITING FOR RUNWAY CLEARANCE...

Female Rufous Hummingbirds have returned with their babies to guzzle at the feeders after a quiet month of nesting…
Usually there are about 12 at each of my three feeders (which I fill at least twice daily)..
I got a kick out of how these little ladies lined up so politely.

This is fantastic, I love these little cuties, I wish we had them over here, xx

  • Karen Tillotson replied

Thanks for your kind comments and the fave, my friend…they definitely are the highlight of the summer months…always so sad to see them go in August!!! But each year when they come back, there are more than the last…which is such a special treat!xx

  • Maureen Maliha

    Maureen Maliha

Wow, Karen!! Fabulous!! I had to put up extra feeders after reading about ‘scissor beaks’. Seems that when these lil guys compete for food, they get their beaks twisted in the feeder holes!! (Though looks as though ‘yours’ are polite little birds) Fabulous capture!

  • Karen Tillotson replied

Thanks very much for your comments and the fave, Maureen! The males are the most aggressive and will dive bomb the other males (especially when the mating rituals are going on) but usually when the breeding is over and the babies are in tow, they’re all a little more forgiving of each other’s presence. In fact, I’ve seen them sit on each other’s shoulders and “double dip” in the feeder…it’s quite the spectacle and I was absolutely shocked the first time I saw that! Truthfully, I could probably use at least two more big feeders…. =D

Amazing capture, Karen! Hummingbirds are so cute. Yes, and polite… And selfless… I remember I was washing out a house using a high pressure water pump. Something stopped me. Water jet was close to that object. First, I thought it was a hornets’ nest. But then I saw a small beak above. I’m so glad I noticed a nest masterly constructed on the antenna wire under the eaves. The nest was tiny as a bird was. She was sitting in the nest on two eggs (two chicks showed up a week later) protecting them with her tiny body. She got wet, of course. However, I’m sooooo veeery happy I didn’t accidentally killed her and crushed the nest. I quit immediately, of course. :)

  • Karen Tillotson replied

Thanks so much Arvy…yes, they’re very protective of their mates & babies. Holy cow, what a find for you to come across the mom & her eggs! Isn’t it wonderful that you noticed the nest just in the nick of time – whew!!!! That would have been so awful had you wiped her out!
I know they’re nesting all over the place here but I’ve yet to come across one…mind you, I don’t look too hard…lol…I’m just delighted I have so many that return here for the summer months!!!

I can only dream of a phto shot like this one! I get maybe 2 at each of my feeders,LOL!

  • Karen Tillotson replied

Thanks so much! When I lived in the city, I’d get all excited to see one or two come to my feeder….I never imagined in my wildest dreams I would see so many now that I’m “rural”...I’ve counted between 50 and 75 zooming around here during the summer for the last three years living here. It’s total HEAVEN! But you have to keep your eyes open and be prepared to duck a lot…haha!!!

  • sunshine0

    sunshine0

I live in upstate n.y which is also rural. My feeders are on my deck and they fight a lot, so it’s hard to even get a a clear shot!

A great image Karen. It almost liikes like a multiple shot of the same bird!

  • Karen Tillotson replied

Thanks Paul, for your visit & great comments. Here’s a shot of a springtime feeding frenzy when the males dominated the feeders well past sundown. It gets really crazy around here!!!!

  • DottieDees

    DottieDees

Wow, Karen this is a fabulous capture…I am lucky to get one in a shot as he runs the rest off as soon as they head towards it!!

  • Karen Tillotson replied

Thank you so much! So grateful for that “wow”...gotta love ‘em! After the breeding season is over, the males are a little less nasty I’ve found however, multiple feeders seem to help tone down the aggression factor. I’ve come to the conclusion that its the elder(s) in the bunch that have “the attitude”...the younger males & the females are much sweeter. And sometimes I think the mid-air ‘squabbles’ are often just playtime!

  • Karen Tillotson replied

This was a hummer of a moment!!! Tee hee. I’m soooooo fortunate to be a rural beast and be able to see dozens flocking about these feeders! I really must go through ALL my photos of these little sweeties and see what’s worthy of a spot here on RB. Thank you thank you thank you!! xo

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

Seriously, Karen, we’re fairly rural here as well … and last year we had almost no hummers at all. I hang my head in shame to admit that I haven’t put the feeders up yet … but you’ve inspired me … i’ll do it tomorrow!!!!! Year before last they were so thick I was careful when I was on my deck … they’d zoom around the corner so fast and furious I was sure I’d wind up with one impaled in my eyeballs!!!! Not to mention, I can’t get over how polite yours are … ours are ferocious … and SO territorial … one would feed, another would come along and chase him away … they were hilarious!!!!!

  • Karen Tillotson replied

You might appreciate this dear Lois…when I’m refilling the feeders out front, the little beggars poke me in the back (especially if I’m wearing pink or red) while they wait for me to finish the job. And some stop about 4 inches from my face and just hover, as if to say, “get the lead out lady…I’m hungry…” I just LOVE these little ones. The girls are the most polite (in the photo)...the boys are total demons…hahahaha.

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

Noooo kidding!!!!! Oh, I can’t imagine being poked in the back by them!!! Yes, I never wear red or pink or yellow outside unless it’s dead of winter … bees and bugs and now hummingbirds … all love those colors!!! But HOW COOL!!!!!! So your guy birdies are evil just like ours??? laughing, laughing ... Ain’t life grand????

  • Karen Tillotson replied

Yup. Life is all about recognizing and then enjoying….the simplest of pleasures. xo
