Up until the 1940’s Shardlow was a busy inland port. During the late 1800’s my gt. gt. gt. aunt, having been widowed and left to bring up her children alone, was the toll house keeper of the old Cavendish bridge at Shardlow which was eventually swept away in 1947. These are the original tolls that were charged to cross the bridge.
