Mink Frog

Mink Frog – rana septentrionalis
Copper Harbor, Michigan, USA

This northwoods frog species is found only in the northern Great Lakes region and likes streams, ponds, lakes where there are cool, permanent bodies of water with lots of lily pads and other water plants. This one was along Lake Superior in a pool of water made by splashing waves.
The Mink Frog is found in and in Northern Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is also found in northern New England and New York and Canada from Nova Scotia west to Manitoba.
When handled, this little frog gives off a musky odor resembling the smell of a mink. People who’ve experienced it have compared the smell to rotting onions. I didn’t handle this one so I didn’t have the pleasure!
