Crimson Carnivale Mask

Crimson Carnivale Mask

This ACEO / miniature art was completed in coloured pencil and ink on drafting film. The reference photo for this artwork was taken by Simon.Monk (flickr creative commons) and was used with his kind permission. I have always had a fascination for the mystique and beauty of the Venetian Carnivale Masks and, in particular, the Jester masks and would like to do a series of artworks on this fascinating theme. This particular artwork will be the subject of a tutorial on coloured pencil and ink drawing on drafting film on my website at http://www.miniatureartbykhull.com/tutorial_ii_21.html.

ok – I thought it was a photograph… WHAT CAN I SAY? WOW!!!

  • Karen Hull replied

You are so generous – it was nice to do something a bit different, but I have to say it took a bit longer than planned. Thank so much for the feedback!

wow, this is incredible. How miniature are these miniatures? Amazing amount of detail!!

  • Karen Hull replied

Thank you so much Barbara. All my miniatures that have ACEO in the description are exactly 2.5×3.5 inches (6.4×8.9cm). Any of my miniature art that doesn’t have that description average 7×9cm. Here in Australia, a miniature has to be less than 10×10cm but different miniature art societies around the world have slight variations on this. Thank you so much for your interest.

Great work!! What is drafting Film ??

  • Karen Hull replied

Thank you Margaret – drafting film is the polyester paper that draftsmen and architects use to do designs and plans on. I believe in the US and Canada, it may come under the name of Mylar with a large choice of weights and thicknesses. Here in Australia, it is simply known as drafting film, and we don’t have a huge range to choose from. It is a fabulous support for pencils, giving a lovely smooth, clean result, but does not accept many layers and is difficult to erase from. Thank you so much for your interest and I hope this helps.

Incredible work Karen, wow so photographic. I can relate to the allure of the masqerade mask I am assisting my sixteen year old niece’s masquerade party at present – such fun – such colour and opulence.
How did you get the pencil work so fine it’s incredible.

  • Karen Hull replied

Thank you for your lovely comments. There is something so mysterious and beautiful about them. I bet you are having a ball with the party – I hope it goes well for her. I keep the pencils really sharp and the drafting film is perfect for crisp fine lines – I love it for that reason. Have a great Easter :-)
