Woman, of Africa

Woman of Africa:

I carry all, of Africa.

the wild drums in my blood
the savage night
curls taut on my bed..

in every sinew of thought
every scar of in-experience,

I carry all of Africa -
in my daily bread.

I hold all of Africa,
within

sensing the tracks where my ancestors tread,
my voice clambers over stories – my stories:
our stories -
caging
the country of my kiln..

I am heard, in Africa

The sound of my heart
is the cry of the acacia tree
pierced
by the blood orange dusk ….

I am the hunger of the tawny cat,
I am the curve of tusk.
I am the dark silence of wisdom
I am the river-change’s white roar

I teem, tall with fertile life,
have made a Lover of strife

I am so utterly broken,
so unutterably open..

I am Woman,
of Africa.

There is nothing domesticated
that runs through my veins
I still house the beast..
its breath is my name

I am woman of Africa,
washed with reverence,
in the sudden-drowning, flash-reviving rain

The rhythm of our ancient past
hangs like an omen in the heat and the veldt and the dust
and settles like a newborn,
vulnerable in swaddling-trust

I am Unashamedly
Woman, of Africa.

I am Life – this is my wealth:
I am life’s longing
for itself.
