Coming In For A Landing
This shot recently recieved 2nd place, out of nearly 3000 entries in a February ‘08 contest on another photosite. So now we can reveal how we did it.
This is actually three separate shots of the same female Calytpe Anna hummingbird in three different positions as she hovered to approach and land on the feeder. I layered each shot over each other, aligned the feeder, masked & blended each layer to expose each bird and merged them all into one image to give the appearance of three separate hummingbirds lined up at the feeder.
Work done with Corel PSP-XI

WoW! Anna’s hummingbird? This is a combination of 3 fine photos into one outstandingly lovely photo. Amazing work, and it’s really cool to see these 3 ‘stages of landing’ together like this.

I really enjoy this photo showing the different posture while landing, I have the same photo software but still haven’t figured out how you do the masking, layers, etc. I’ve tried a lot in the past week to no avail : ( I can see why you won but it should have been 1st!

Thanks, keep at it. There are probably several ways (or procedures) to accomplish what I’ve been doing with these types of images. In teaching myself to use the Corel program, no doubt, I’m probably doing it the hard way..haha. Glad you liked the final product. Please look at our profile for more examples of the same processes used for this image.
