This is very cool. I went cage diving with Great Whites off the coast of South Africa last year with Michael Rutzen’s company. He has made a doco of this phenomena around the world and his pursuit to do this with Great Whites. It’s pretty cool. He demostrated it with a number of species including tiger sharks. There were 2 main ways it was achieved. By turning them over, and by rubbing their nose (ampullae of lorenzini).

  • Norbert Probst replied 27 days ago

You’re right Chris. I have seen it with different species of sharks.

Aloha Norbert, here on Maui and the Hawaiian islands, the shark represents for many families a sacred Aumakua, a spiritual guide.
“In Hawaiian mythology, an ʻaumakua (pronounced /ˌaʊməˈkuːə/, us dict: ow′·mə·kōō′·ə in English; often spelled aumakua) is a family god, often a deified ancestor. The Hawaiian plural of ʻaumakua is nā ʻaumākua ([ˈnaːʔɐuˈmaːkuə]), although in English the plural is usually ʻaumakuas. Nā ʻaumākua frequently manifested as animals such as sharks or owls. Nā ʻaumākua were worshipped at localities (often rocks) where they were believed to “dwell. The appearance of an animal one regarded as an ʻaumakua was often believed to be an omen (of good or ill). There are also many stories of nā ʻaumākua (in animal form) intervening to save their descendants from harm. It was extremely bad luck to harm a manifested ʻaumakua.

Sulawesi I actually had to “google” as I am unfamiliar with it, and “world class coral gardens” sounds so beautiful.

What an amazing adventure you will have :))))

  • Norbert Probst replied 25 days ago

Which volcano is steaming? I am in the South, an island named Selayar. It’s about 70 Kilometer long and 1,5 Kilometers wide. In Bali I stay in Tulamben, which is one of the best places. Some of my favorite pictures (Twister..) I did there.
But I’ve never been in Hawaii :-/
