This is very cool. I went cage diving with Great Whites off the coast of South Africa last year with Michael Rutzen’s company. He has made a doco of this phenomena around the world and his pursuit to do this with Great Whites. It’s pretty cool. He demostrated it with a number of species including tiger sharks. There were 2 main ways it was achieved. By turning them over, and by rubbing their nose (ampullae of lorenzini).
Norbert Probst replied
You’re right Chris. I have seen it with different species of sharks.
Regards, Norbert

Aloha Norbert, here on Maui and the Hawaiian islands, the shark represents for many families a sacred Aumakua, a spiritual guide.
“In Hawaiian mythology, an ʻaumakua (pronounced /ˌaʊməˈkuːə/, us dict: ow′·mə·kōō′·ə in English; often spelled aumakua) is a family god, often a deified ancestor. The Hawaiian plural of ʻaumakua is nā ʻaumākua ([ˈnaːʔɐuˈmaːkuə]), although in English the plural is usually ʻaumakuas. Nā ʻaumākua frequently manifested as animals such as sharks or owls. Nā ʻaumākua were worshipped at localities (often rocks) where they were believed to “dwell. The appearance of an animal one regarded as an ʻaumakua was often believed to be an omen (of good or ill). There are also many stories of nā ʻaumākua (in animal form) intervening to save their descendants from harm. It was extremely bad luck to harm a manifested ʻaumakua.
Norbert Probst replied
Hi Sharon,
thank you very much for this interesting information, I did’t know!
Sharon Mau
You’re welcome Norbert, it is a fascinating read.
And your image is very beautiful. I love your deep sea diving underwater photography, it is sensational.
Norbert Probst replied
Thank you again Sharon. It’s my life, and I love it! November 20., I go again to Sulawesi and Bali, Indonesia….
Sharon Mau
That is so wonderful Norbert!
Sulawesi I actually had to “google” as I am unfamiliar with it, and “world class coral gardens” sounds so beautiful.
Norbert Probst replied
I was several times there. It’s wonderful.
Sharon Mau
And a steaming volcano!!
What an amazing adventure you will have :))))
Norbert Probst replied
Which volcano is steaming? I am in the South, an island named Selayar. It’s about 70 Kilometer long and 1,5 Kilometers wide. In Bali I stay in Tulamben, which is one of the best places. Some of my favorite pictures (Twister..) I did there.
But I’ve never been in Hawaii :-/

Wonderful
Richard Barry
Hi Norbert… You work is breathtaking and it would take all day to comment on each amazing shot.
Question on this shot: I was under the impression that all aquatic creatures were covered in a delicate membrane that was disturbed by contact with humans. That’s what I’ve been told when I dive… Are sharks the exception?
Norbert Probst replied
Thank you Richard. At the Maldives I saw a grouper who likes to be touched by divers every day. I don’t know what I should believe.
Gina Cormier
Oh…it’s the ole tip him over and rub his belly trick!! lol Very cool shot!
Norbert Probst
Thanks Gina. The dive guide did a cool job.

So much courage.
Norbert Probst replied
No, knowledge!

And courage. At least for me, because I would be too scared to go there.
