Part of the recovered wreck of the Batavia which was wrecked in 1629 on Morning Reef in the Wallabi Group of the Abrolhas Islands.

This section of the Batavia is preserved in a section of the Western Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle WA.

Definitely worth a walk around this exhibit and to see the huge beams in their rough state which formed the inside of the ship

A touch of hdr to bring out the warmth of the timber, however, the exhibit is lit with soft warm lighting which also bring out the colour of the ancient timbers

I live in beautiful Western Australia, where we are lucky to a wonderful diversity of wildflowers, many of which appear in my portfolio.

I remember this so vividly, as we went to this museum ourselves.
We actually bought one of those bricks from the tourist shop as a memento…

  • Ah, so you will appreciate the impact of the room from just going in the doors :)

I remember that arch in the background, and that the bricks the Batavia were carrying, were to build an arch exactly like that at their destination….
There is so much history about this voyage that you just cannot get your brain around it all……
    .
When I was SCUBA diving many years ago, I met a diver who actually found some of the gold coins from the wreckage… and it was him that sent me on the path of curiosity with this wreck…
It opened up a whole new world for me….
