Sherborne Old Castle was first built by Robert, Bishop of Salisbury in early 12th century and had a tower in each corner. It was used as a palace but later fell into decay and mostly demolished after a long seige during the Civil War. Sir Walter Raleigh was given the Sherborne Estates in 16th Century and started to modernise it, before giving up and building a new castle which is still in use on another part of the estate.

Lovely remains of the old castle and the sky is fabulous. :) Don’t you just hate it when tourists are every where?

  • Sometimes yes, but they do add size perspective :)

What a shame, I would have loved to have seen the entire castle. Nice colourful shot though Kala of what is remaining.

  • It is still an imposing structure, even in its ruin
