Penguin Island is the only island that can be walked upon in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park which is managed by CALM. The island is 1 km offshore in the Safety Bay/Shoalwater area. The reserve was formed in 1987 and consists of many rocky outcrops, Seal Island, Penguin Island and Bird Island.
In ancient times it was Jarrah forests and in some places the petrified roots of the trees can be seen in the rocks. 48 species of birds have been found in the Marine Park, along with sealions, dolphins, and New Zealand fur seals.
