Red Bottlebrush
Brilliant scarlet bottlebrush – Melaleuca – belong to a large genus of evergreen trees and shrubs which are indigenous to Australia, except for a handful of species found in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and coastal south-east Asia. Some species have beautiful papery bark which peels off in large sheets. They bear profuse brush-like flowers with showy stamens and their nectar provides food for birds and small animals. The leathery leaves are small and are either cylindrical or flat. Melaleucas are remarkably free from pests and disease. Info from Australian Native Plants – Random House.
Photo taken at Harvey Dam, which is south of Perth in sw Western Australia.
