Melaleuca elliptica

Melaleuca elliptica or Granite Honey Myrtle occurs in the souther part of Western Australia and ranges from Esperance in the east to the Stirling Ranges and then northward to Sharks Bay. It is usually found in full sun on outcropping granite, preferring fair to well-drained soils. Can withstand salt winds in dry coastal areas and makes a good screen againts salt spray. It is not threatened.

Cultivated, it grows to 2-3m high and 2m wide with intricate branching. The foliage is grey-green with elliptical leaves 15mm wide by 12mm long. In frosty areas, the leaves get a purplish tint.

Flowers spring, summer and autumn with a peak around December in Canberra. Has large deep red bottlebrush flowers to 8cm long, which are attractive to birds. Flowers are borne on old wood.
