Spray Up

Many frustrating shots eventually resulted in this one of the spray hitting a high peak on the rock bank. When the spray subsides it left a little ‘waterfall’ down over the jumble of rocks in the forground.

Beautiful and exciting Canal Rocks are part of the Leeuwin-Naturalist National Park in south western Western Australia.

The natural attraction is best reached and viewed from a small bridge, which is only wide enough for one person to walk along, which crosses one of the smaller canals. The sign on the bridge suggests that it is not wise to cross when the bridge is wet.

The water surging through two rock banks from the open sea is very strong and rushes through the calmer beach on the other side of the bridge. Water colour is quite amazing as it changes from turquoise to green and dark blue and sometimes all three colours are visible.

To reach Canal Rocks drive south from Perth for about 3 hours, driving past Dunsborough and turning left towards Smiths Beach when the road points to Yallingup, which in itself it well known for its surfing.

The trouble is you don’t get much warning this is about to happen because the bulk of the surf and swell is hidden behind the rocks. You can stand there for ages with camera at the ready but turn away for a second and it’s a pound to a pinch of salt you’ll miss it!! So that makes this shot extra special and very well done indeed. Peter

Yes I missed heaps, even with wave counting and because my camera is slow to react had to actually click before the wave broke. Also got distracted many times by other exciting water movement and missed everything. Really appreciated your comment Peter, thenk you.
