Italian Chapel

On the Orkney islands, there is a Nissan hut, which was converted by the Italian prisoners or war into a chapel for themselves. Every piece of the altar, including the brick detail at the side is painted. It is truly a remarkable piece of work.

Oh yes! and photographed it too!
it is an amazing place and a beautiful work of art considering the construction circumstances, time, materials and those men have achieved a very humane wonder out of their own condition there… I think the Italian Chapel is an hymn to love in a very sombre time. A hymn to humanity. :))

wonderful capture. This small and very unusual chapel has been preserved for all time and will continue to be an inspiration to all who view it. Have a look at The Italian Chapel on Undiscovered Scotland for the history.
