Initial lay up of the colors, cover my whole canvas with the my two primary colors I will use pink/purples and blue blacks. I wanted to keep everything simple and basic as in the original composition and let it all be about the horse. I liked the high contrast of light and dark in the original so I use the moon shine to serve that purpose also to high light The body with the white “sheen” I like so much in Laura’s piece.and I turned the head so he wouldnt run off the page and better engage the viewers eye movements to the work…will have to change the face of the horse to look more like a horse with eyes on the side( thanks Tahnja) since only predators have eyes to the front (for hunting). So now I have the back light silhouette effect, the high contrast legs, muscles and movement with body"sheen" ,and a wild free spirit feeling painting.. all the things from the original painting in my work simplified and enhanced to fit my dramatic theme – “Spirit of Freedom” in memory to 9-11. (its also done in red white and blues) 16″ × 20″ oil on primed masonite panel.
