A stillborn baby in formaldehyde, gruesome in some way, symbolizes what remains in the absence of a soul. Inspired by the words of the philosopher Martha Nussbaum and her idea of bringing the soul back into our society. If the body is al there’s left, it is only the memory that remains.

I read an excellent review of Martha Nussbaum’s idea on an Union College internet page:
“Democracies have great rational and imaginative powers. They also are prone to some serious flaws in reasoning, to parochialism, haste, sloppiness, selfishness. Education based mainly on profitability in the global market magnifies these deficiencies, producing a greedy obtuseness and a technically trained docility that threaten the very life of democracy itself, and that certainly impede the creation of a decent world culture. If we do not insist on the crucial importance of the humanities and the arts, they will drop away, because they don’t make money. They only do what is much more precious than that, make a world that is worth living in, people who are able to see other human beings as equals, and nations that are able to overcome fear and suspicion in favor of sympathetic and reasoned debate” [source: www.union.edu].

  • Hi Zombie, Hmmm, kind of weird to call a living individual a zombie! But I looked at your art and I like it! You must have a very good sense of humour and I hope that’s not the reason you like my art. No kidding, This is my debute at Horrorama, I finally succeeded!! Many thanks for that! Best wishes for 2012! Kind regards,

Even in the absence of the soul there is a part of the memory that still leaves us with the soul… Joseph

  • Hi Donna, that is an interesting thought. Thanks! Greetings,
