Dreams of Pain

My dreams, mostly harmless fantasy, escapism from the daily grind
They serve good purpose for creative thought, in releasing my weary mind
I dream of many things, having in consciousness little connection
Simple story lines and circumstance, that bears no true life reflection

But recently my dreams are more, of things I want and desire
Of love and being with another, to satisfy my passion on fire
A person out of reach, never mine, but still intensely adored
So my dream world is the only place, this love can be explored

I dream too of other wants, that seem so captivating
Of things not done, opportunities missed, to avoid degenerating
Where might I be, or with whom, if a different path I’d taken?
Then from my dream reality strikes, shaken abruptly to awaken

They are my real life needs and now, in consciousness evaporated
What to do to quell these dreams, can they really be incinerated?
To make do without my imaginings, I must try to do this thing
To put away my dreams, and be satisfied with whatever future brings

Why am I such a dreamer, always looking beyond what I possess?
Others seem so contented, even when having far less
Do I wish I were not this dreamer, so my mind were free?
No, I want to keep my dreams, they are me, my very self, it’s how I see

Wow, I love this. It perfectly captures how I dream as well.
    I love the conclusion:
Do I wish I were not this dreamer, so my mind were free?
No, I want to keep my dreams, they are me, my very self, it’s how I see

  • Oh Erika, to have you, who I so admire, commenting on my humble work has made me very happy indeed. And pleased you enjoyed the conclusion too. Thank you so much my friend.

Without the dreams you might as well pack it in right now, the daily grind will only satisfy those who cannot or will not think. You’re not alone JW, the future always looks brighter if we dream and this place is full of dreamers :-)

  • Hello Matt. Once again, your words offer me great encouragement to continue at this writing game. I really appreciate you taking time to read, digest and comment. Thank you, fellow dreamer :)

wow.. I really like this piece especially seeing I can identify with so much in it. Plus aren’t dreams things that can be reached for, in a sense a hope. The caged bird can dream of flight and freedom, dreams are liberating!! Brilliant writing!

  • Yes, we need to dream, I agree, but there can be that negative side, where dreaming of something you dearly want for in real life, that can never be yours, which can twist your mind.
But in general, yes, dreams are what give us hope.

This is so thought provoking. In this piece you were able to analyze the nature of your dreaming and consider its value, but in such a lovely lyrical way. I so relate to this for so many reasons. Thank you for writing it and thank you for sharing such a deep part of your self. It’s words like these that make us dreamers feel more understood, but better than that, not so bad for having desires beyond our “daily grind” reality.

  • Hey, fellow dreamer, so pleased my words hit truths with you too, and that you enjoyed how I tried to describe these things. Thank you for your response, very much appreciated.

Dreams for me are such a mixture of ‘things’……a release of the unwanted, the way to touch what I cannot, the creative spirit talking in whispers or shouting! ……….Reading this I felt we were kindred folk…..nice to meet another dreamer who dreams within dreams. Thought provoking verse about the power there can be just in the dream itself…..and then reality takes hold and we have to feel the undercurrent left in us as we awaken. This was such a well penned verse. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. X

  • Hi KarenSue, I’m so pleased you understood what I was trying to say in this poem of mine. It’s good to know you and others reading this, have similar thoughts and dreams and I’m very pleased that you think it well penned, so for me, making sharing worthwhile. Thank you.

From one dreamer to another…truly wonderful writing! “Why am I such a dreamer, always looking beyond what I possess?” Because dreams give us wings, the power to soar to great heights, explore the realms of possibility and if we have the courage and true desire, achieve amazing things…..They are indeed us, our very self, how we see….. ;)

  • Many thanks Liiliana, my fellow dreamer. As always, I truly appreciate of your comments on my work, it means a lot to get such sincere feedback.
