Graphite pencil drawiing scanned and worked on in Fireworks.
This is another of my Escape drawings – a graphite pencil sketch from a classical sculpture of the Ancient Greek God of War, Ares. It was done about the same time as the Alexander sketch – when I was about 15 and still at school (see original sketch below)..
As I worked on it this morning, it struck me how they created this wonderful sculpture of the most warlike of their gods, with a beautiful. calm, emotionless face, looking out upon the carnage of his domain. But then, the Greeks were a warlike lot in those days.
Addendum : the style of that helmet was worrying me a bit so I googled and finally found out this wasn’t Greek it was Roman. Ah well, pari passu – can’t win ’em all …
