This is the supermarket I used to go to down the bottom of Anglesea Street when I worked in Hamilton, NZ. And in midwinter it was very often almost dark before I got there after work. I’ve often sat looking at the lights, and the people coming and going – and one night I took out my camera and managed to get a couple of shots.
From that came this worfk.
I’m glad I did it. Last time I visited Hamilton I was shocked to find all the shop’s front facade completely blocked out and a rabbit-warren entrance tacked on round the side. More shelf space no doubt … The shop had become a big, ugly, blank, faceless box instead of the welcoming place I’d remembered. A sad commentary on profits and the city life.
