A sketch of my elderly Staffy cross dog, Flynn, lying betwen my feet during a break.

Flynn was a survivor with a mangled face (car accidents) and pus coming out of one eye, and when I took him on over 11 years ago, the vets estimated he was 9 years old.

Whatever his age, he is a very old dog and I don’t know how much longer he will be with me, as he is getting frailer by the day. The thought of having him put down is incredibly painful – and having handled stock on my 10 acre block for years, I am no stranger to death. But this dog is my love.

I am putting this series up as a tribute to him

Drawn 1 Nov 2009 with ballpoint pen on notepaper, enhanced in Fireworks. See also :

Lovely work.. I wish he is there for a long time to come and the vet’s initial estimate on his age is wrong.. :)

  • Thank you Rahul – I wish it was so, too …

This reminds me of a japanese poem, – so minimalist, so sparse and yet so powerful. Instant fave.

Great sketch and after reading your text I love it even more, sending love to Staffy!

  • Thank you Mags – it will be a hard day for me when he goes “home”. He takes a bit of looking after now, but I don’t begrudge it.

Gorgeous sketch, and great line-work. To have a friend like Flynn must have been truly wonderful :)

  • Thank you Chris – yes it was, because he was very wise. When I first set eyes on him and he looked up at me, the look and presence of him made me say, “And who are you?” – seems like it was only yeaterday. And that was the beginning of it. Thriough him particularly, I gained some small understanding of the wisdom of animals.

This is a really good sketch Patricia and such a wonderful tale.
I can really imagine your pain at having to let Flynn go one day. At least you will always know that he has had it really good with you for the last 11 years.

  • EvaBridget, thank you for dtopping by and thank ypu for this lovely comment. I had to have Flynn put down about 4 weeks ago, and I have posted the draft of a tribute image to him HERE .
