Main Range Tararuas by

About This Painting
The bush is beautiful, but for me getting up onto to the tops was always the main aim of the exercise.

This is one of my favourite paintings, with the warm sunlight striking across onto the tops of the Main Range at over 3500 feet in the Tararuas, north of Wellington – one of my favourite stamping grounds. At this level, the forest gives way to tussock grassland which clothes the hills in gold.

You can almost hear the sound of the mighty Waiohine river in the shadows below, rising up from the gorge on the still air.

Acrylic on canvas board 30 × 20in.

I love this, the color, the flowing forms and the altogether simplicity of it(which is a real art to try to keep it that way) is beautiful.

  • Thank you Mario – I very much admire your work, so it’s wonderful to have this comment!
