When I was 16 years old, I wrote, “Love is like a real warm glow”.
I still feel love within me, much in the same way today – like a warm glowing light which rises, fills and expands from inside my heart.
When we find our connection to the love energy within us – to our open hearts – we can create a deeper union to ourselves; we can develop and nurture within us, the state of bliss, compassion, inner-peacefulness and unconditional love; and we can become wonderfully nourishing to others, both within our relationships and in every other aspect of our lives.
So what are some pathways toward our open hearts?
1. Finding your “Little Things”
It is often said we should enjoy the “little things” in each day – but what little things?
We each have our own ideals of what little things fill us with joy, fulfilment and contentment. Write a list and see what comes up for you!
I have a friend who loves to sit on the porch and watch the sunset each day – for me, I love getting out into nature, enjoying a little exercise and spending time in and around water (swimming in my pool, hiking to waterfalls and/or heading down the beach for some quality ocean time, or even simply appreciating the luxury of water running over my body when I’m in the shower!).
When we say yes to the little things that brings us joy in each day, we bring a little happiness and appreciation to ourselves within each day!
2. Writing an appreciation list
Taking a moment, either first thing in the morning or at the end of our evenings as we prepare for bed, to write down a few of the things we’ve loved about our day can grow within us, the connection to our open hearts.
This idea of a “grateful for” journal is not a new idea, for the very reason it is such a beautiful way to find your way to peace and to send that peaceful, loving energy outwards as well.
When we feel appreciation we feel blessed. When we make lists of the things we are grateful for, we become aware of all the joys within our lives.
Every morning and evening I can’t wait to meditate!
Practising coming into my place of stillness and connection, gives way to a deep rising of pure love energy which seems to grow eternally within in each and every practise. When we consistently meditate like this we begin to carry the sense of peacefulness we attain everywhere – both within ourselves and with every interaction we share with others.
Sometimes finding stillness and union is easier to find within the movement of a vinyasa flow series. The union that streams between breath and body, mind and spirit, can help us to open our hearts.
5. Finding your state of humility
To me – living with humility has been a challenging journey towards finding myself completely, to forgiving myself completely and to accepting myself and others as we are in each instant.
Giving this gift to me has opened my heart to love and compassion.
When we can truly accept each part of ourselves and others, we live with the sereneness of the flow of life, exactly as it is. We find ourselves loving what is. Our hearts become naturally open.
6. Practising loving thoughts
Being aware of our thoughts means we can to shift our perspective to love when we find our minds drifting elsewhere.
We are all human and have human egos which serve us well for our survival needs – and yet we also have the ability to see beyond our survival instincts (and fear driven reactions), to instead choose a more helpful, kind and compassionate path forward – it is perhaps the most beneficial practise we can develop for ourselves and our loved ones.
7. Practising loving actions
When we practise loving thoughts our gestures become more loving as a natural result.
We can also make the choice to actively develop kindness within our actions, both towards ourselves and others, by practising loving actions each day – whether something little like making a morning coffee for a loved one, saying yes to helping a friend in need, or something of larger benefit to the community such a volunteering at a local animal shelter etc. It is often nice simply to think of something nice you can do for someone you love. A small thoughtful gesture can bring so much joy and immediately bring you to the joyous, loving feeling within your open heart in that moment!
8. All that’s for sure is each moment!
Our connection with ourselves occurs within each moment. This is why meditation; yoga; taking notice of our thoughts and actions; and connecting to the small, joyous, little things within each day are all wonderful pathways to the openness within our hearts.
Our openness is felt when we are present.
When we each find our way to this presence – and to our open hearts – we brim with love and it spills outward from us – affecting every person and situation we meet; we create loving, nurturing relationships with our loved ones and bring peaceful energy with us into the world, as we encounter it.
Love is like a real warm glow – and it is ever expanding.
