Vaike Tikker from 58 Foveaux St, Surry Hills by

This work is 40cm X 50cm acrylic paint on canvas

This is supposed to go to the Tap Gallery as an entry into the Oxford Art Prize and all entries are to be about the postcode 2010 – Surry Hills, Sydney.

58 Foveaux St was my first home, where my mother Vaike Tikker lived in 1964. Vaike could not cope as a single mum and I was adopted out quite soon after my birth.

58 Foveaux St is now a car park but I am imagining Vaike looking down on her old neighbourhood and hopefully happy and at peace.

acrylic painting, foveaux street, streetscape, surry hills

I am inspired by organic forms in nature as well as the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements so I tend towards work which is rustic and linear and colours which can also be decorative and often symbolic.

I love to paint and draw and to see other people’s art and am looking forward to making some connections with others – which is really what it is all about, for me.
