Leura used to be my home and the reasons that I love it are also the reasons that I left….because it is a little holiday village, every second house is a holiday let – so the village can feel, at times very empty … you can walk just a little off the beaten track and be, completely alone and see nobody at all for quite a long time. As with many villages in the Blue Mountains, Leura is a strange mixture of the very contained and controlled on the very edge of a wild and untamed area of wilderness. Some villagers move there to be part of the wilderness while others want the ‘English village’ feel of life there. Such a duality! I miss this place and had some of my happiest moments there … but a small part of me feels that being drawn back to that area, being bewitched by it somehow, is not the best place to be and is something to be resisted. Perhaps it’s the going back thing – the idea of trying to recapture lost times….

I am inspired by organic forms in nature as well as the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements so I tend towards work which is rustic and linear and colours which can also be decorative and often symbolic.

I love to paint and draw and to see other people’s art and am looking forward to making some connections with others – which is really what it is all about, for me.

This is pure magic Julie-Ann … such vibrant colours … like so much of your work is. This is a very crisp painting and leads the the eye down this beautiful path. I love the narrative and I too feel the same thing about going back to the Hawkesbury/Blue Mountains … there is always a feeling of belonging to times now gone … we do cling to those days and feelings … they are like a secure safety blanket. I know one day my safety net will be broken … that day I go back to Kurrajong Heights and find the old property has been developed … then I will let go. Thank you for stirring these memories for me too♥

  • Thanks for understanding Bev – I know that you know exactly what I tried to say ..memories are lovely and painful too – they make us who we are, even if we don’t exactly like who we are – you are a real friend Bev & can’t wait to see you again one day

Beautiful work Jules. The colours are so romantic. I feel if you go back to live in a place where you once lived before it is never the same. The connection is lost in time. Cheers matey :))

  • Hey Jules – you are very wise – the connections are lost – life is like that over and over. Thanks very much for the comment – I love your Melbourne work

OMG… I love this! I love the colours, shapes and patterns… it makes me feel Leura! You know how I feel about up there… I just know in my heart it wouldn’t take too much for me to move back (though I totally understand what you’re saying). For me I know it wouldn’t be the same… it would be different… but I wouldn’t be looking for the same life I had even though it was one of the happiest times as it was for you… but I won’t be moving back anytime soon. Hubby says he couldn’t live there again and visits are enough… so it looks like that’s what I will content myself with. But enough of that… I just love this painting and hope that you keep producing these beautiful artworks for me to enjoy and reminisce over…. lol! : )) PS. How selfish is that!! Hahaha!! ; ))

  • I understand your feelings Jen – it is a bind isn’t it – thanks so very much
