The Constellation Orion by Julian Wilde

The genisis for this particular image came during an afternoon cup of coffee with a friend of mine. At about mid conversation, she asked very seriously, “What could you do in a photograph to represent Mankind in an iconic way?”

I looked at her and then stared at my cappaccino for a moment… It occurred to me that one of the most iconic things about Mankind is that He is a survivor; that He will do all things within his power to prevail. and that his survival has always depended on his intelligence and his cunning. And that his unlimited imagination coupled to His will, has over the course of history proven a powerful combination.

That’s when the above image flashed across my brain. It was “as clear as a bell.” Fully formed.
Fully realized. All I had to do was “shoot it.”

So I made a few phone calls. And that night I began to collect and lash together all of the curly willow I had in my studio and created The Bow and Arrow for another friend of mine named Sebastien. Who then became “Man,” and pulling back upon the bow with all his might, and taking aim at the very heavens, Man became a god; to be forever immortalized in the constellation known as “Orion.”

I’ve been doing this for over 15 years.
I was inspired to do this at the age of 22 by Helmut Newton.
I have a love affair with the kind of photography that I do that is beyond my understanding.
I do beautiful fine art coffee table books.
I’m married to my stylist and the love of my life, Raven.
Oh! And I throw parties for a living.
Large parties.

Wow. Not only does the figure have balance but so does the image. I get the impression he is not shooting blindly, I can imagine that he has his target in sight. Powerful stuff.

  • In My Story… One of the jealous Gods hs stolen Oron’s beautiful bride form his bed, on his wedding night. And now, emerging from the dark woods on a moonlless night… Orion takes aim just as an opening appears in the clouds. ;-)

I love mythology, and this one compliments it greatly! I love the fact that he looks so statueske and yet he seems to move – the rippling muscles are almost moving! It reminds me of ancient greek statues… Beautiful..
