Hey Melbourne….there is this big broken thing down there in Docklands…. what is the story with this thingy? …. I had a day as a tourist in Melbourne recently and I was fascinated by this broken thing…. I had to go down and have a real close look at it….. so cool but so wrong somehow……

i dunno a thing about it, except that it makes a fantastic photograph as a broken thing. But then I have a penchant for broken things :-)

  • this big ferris wheel thing just did my head in…. I got of the warm comfy tourist tram to go and find it and just check it right out…….. how can something as big and expensive looking as this be wrongly calibrated….. and all those expensive empty shops down there…. gordon bennet it was like a ghost town down there…. those people can’t be too happy about the ‘thing’ breaking down so spectacularly……

great capture juilee… and i had to smile at your adventure with it… i can see you being possessed by it for those few minutes……b

  • hey butch… yes it was fascinating…. you can see this all over Melbourne as it’s so prominent and so big…. and so broken…. no joke some one really stuffed up big time with this thingy… it’s clearly meant to be like the London Eye ..and I can see how it would a wonderful thing to bung tourists on….but after like a couple of months it just died…. broke…… oh dear……

and yes picture this… here I am all cozyed up on a cold and rainy day on a splendid little red tram that goes in a big loop around the city for the tourists and I just had to get off and go and find this thing and look at it for a while….. it’s so quite nearly a good idea….. :)

A little bit like Redbubble ,the fun goes when little bits “Like people disappear”.Great shor Juilee

  • alistair you have hit it right on the head…. I got so upset about people being disappeared in the middle of the night with no warning that I had to post this… RB is based in Melbourne where this ridiculous broken thing is and I was motivated to post it after realizing something is happening in Melbourne and some of it is broken…. bad broken thinking and decsion making going on in Melbourne right now….this image then is a metaphor for RB

at first i thought it was a work in progress.. but how sad to be so new and broken :(

  • hi dinghy this is so wrong… aparently big cracks started appearing in the steel arms only a month or two after they finished building it…. no joke the manufactures never even checked the specs on this before they built the damned thing….. very dodgy… remarkable to look at and it really dominates the skyline which makes it a nice photo prop though so I guess it’s good for something……:)

apparently the hot summer was too much for it and it’s expansions and contractions broke it… it also broke the businesses that were lured to Docklands on the assurances of zillions of twits from the burbs who would turn up for a ride and also buy junk food..
    sigh… circus’, circus’…

  • hi lawrence… someone tried that theory on me already… they said there was a really hot day and the steel cracked…. hello hello I don’t think so…. steel is produced under extraordinariy high temperatures… a 45 degree day shouldn’t have even the slightest effect on it…..the load bearing stuff wasn’t tabulated properly… I mean this is really basic physics they have screwed up on…. the London Eye is much bigger that this and it’s canterlevered out over the river Thames as well and its fine… works well and is competely safe…this is like something out of a Christmas cracker….. so dodgey….but so many people have been badly effected by this…all those buisness down in that sad deserted Docklands area…. they should sue like bastards……

..and it was made in Japan….

  • yes I heard it was made in Japan… which suprised me… ususally the Japanese are pretty together with making big things like this…. yet it’s just a hugely expensive bit of crap….. such a shame

ah yes, melbourne’s latest most expensive mistake. I’m with flower on this .. i like broken things too so this really appeals to me.

  • hi PJ and thanks…. it’s was very magnetic to me to be honest but not for any good reasons… just because it was so big and so wrong….. what a cock up hey…..

This thing cost squillions and as lawrencew says it was supposed to attract lots of tourists to take and ride and look at the …er… docks & container stacks from the top. Then spend heaps on $$ at the shops below. We had one hot 42 deg day and it melted. So now they have to pull it apart and start again.

The really cool part of the story is that a few days before it broke a young gentleman and his lady friend took a ride in one of the viewing pods one evening and while circulating got a bit amorous. They decided to do the business on the bench inside the pod while on a rotate apparently and were seen from an opposing pod by a journalist who just happened to have his camera with him. See link here

  • hiya Lawford and yes I followed to linky thing and what a hoot….$100 million bucks on a broken bit of crap and the dreams of all those retailers just totally gone….. at least one couple had a bit of fun I guess…. :)
