a candid shot of the girls around the bar at a rage of a gig …. most likely featureing Tom Ellard and the Severed Heads at the legendary Art Unit in the bowels of Sydney back in the early eighties….. my sister at the bar and a couple of girls looking a bit like bunnies caught in the headlights…. hey most of what I can remember of the eightes where a bit like that…. oh well …. it was a way cool time and a way cool place to be….. I think…. from what I can remember….. lucky I took a few snaps hey….. :)

How you can strip away the patina of romantic glamour from your nostalgia. And how you create a sense of that middle place where people pass between the kingdom of kiddie-hood, and the empire of identity. You can watch personalities coming together here, as if clay is forming and hardening into a sculpture.

  • hi Ted… gee I love your responses…. you actually look at things…. you think before you speak…. and you look and you see simltaneously …. not at all that common in my experience…

how can I strip away the romance from my nostalgia…. easy … liberal doses of paint stripper… nostalgia is a dangerous thing… left unbridled it can cause mould to grow in the brain…. time passes but angst and pain remain no matter what era we pass through…. we can rub of the sharp edges of what formed us but can we really delete our programming that easily?….I don’t think so….. not all these girl sculptures got the chance to get fired and firm up into life as a larger persona…. one fled home to mama… one died and one survived and one grew wings and thrived….. which is which… and remember one of the girls was on the other side of the lens….watching observing waiting and somehow just knowing that pain is both fleeting and permanent…… no time for the rosy glow of fading memory and no time for greatest hits radio either….. it was bring in on baby then and it’s still bring it on baby now…..

    Love this. Oh-so candid. :)
What made the nice little streak across the middle of the photo, I wonder?

  • hi darling…. glad you like this…. and that little streak… do you know I’ve wondered that myself on many occasions…. no idea to be honest… it’s on the neg…. must be some of your famous ecktoplasm……:)

Juilee it is an absolute principle that a memory is altered each time it is retrieved and re-filed. I guess we add on debris at the moment in which we toss the thing around. And I suppose the friction of opening, examining, and sliding it back into place scours away some of the original reality. But it sure does feel as if you loaded a lot of authentic sensations when you captured this image to spring out at us. Yeah…itza searing ‘bring it on’ moment. WHACK! Your work resonates its candor powerfully. Bluntly. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • I think I’m in love with you Teddy boy… will you write all my press releases from now on?………:)
