she holds back the sun by Juilee Pryor

Small (23.2" x 15.9")

Available to buy on…

nearly four months ago I sent ten rolls of various special films away to a lab for processing but only eight came back…. I had such angst… although to be fair possibly not as much in the end as the lab guy who had to take my endless calls about the missing films…. anyway just to show that miracles do sometimes happen…. today out of a clear blue sky…. my missing film turned up….

I am just sooo happy about it…… that I’m uploading one straight from the scanner… nothing has been done to this at all….. it’s straight from the camera then a couple of months trolling about doing god knows what and then scanned and brought to you …..

she holds back the sun at around 5.30am at the ladies baths at Flagstaff Hill just under the lighthouse in Wollongong…… enjoy

Fantastic that your film appeared as if by magic! Great image too!

  • thanks Helen… it’s a birthday pressie from the gods….. if you squint your eyes up really strangely my weird bent fingered hand looks a bit like angels hugging in the dawn….. ok well maybe not but something strange was going on to have this film arrive after I had totally given up it….and I don’t easily give up on things…. I’m stoked…..:)

    so wots the special film??

Nice use of available body parts to hold back the sun too ;)

  • anything I can’t process myself is special film… in this case velvia colour postive…or slidefilm…. such rich tonal values… the slides are richer than what’s posted… the scanner knocks a bit out and I didn’t want to use PS on it…. the colours are still pretty rich to be honest….and over saturating images is a bit a disease around here sometimes….. hard to believe that this has in effect been desaturated …..

Ahhh…I’ve read about provia….and seen some ps actions that apparently produce a similar look…..

  • Mel it’s good good good… worth the trouble to shoot analouge…. same reason I shoot IR with film… it allows more latitude for magic to happen…. and I love the strange unpredictable nature of film over the homogeousness of PS… although don’t get me wrong… me and PS are very close…. love digital and love PS but film has the bigger share of my affections….. :)

Ahh, the deep joy in finding lost images!!

I have a couple of slide films, taken in africa about 8 years ago, that I keep threatening to get processed, one day. Maybe i’ll wait for them to stew a bit more, just to make sure they’re ripe.

Great shot by the way, didn’t realise you had hands bigger than a supertanker.

That must make all the men in your life feel very inadequate…….

  • oh haha… every one is a comedian today… yes she holds a supertanker on her thumb…. de dum de dum …. at least no one minds about how bent my fingers are….

hey you know what… that slowing maturing slide film sounds very interesting… do it… go on you know you what to… get the buggers processed….. hugs darlin….:)

love the subtleties and range and depth of colour here – gorgeos capture and what a blast to have it appear out of the blue like that !

  • hi maggie… yes I was so thrilled that this two rolls of film just showed up after all that time…. I’d given up ….. and I’m not really sure that this is such a wonderful shot but when I was squizzing at the negs I couldn’t quite work out what I was looking at….my hand as it turned out… but it looked kind of sculptural somehow so I thought I’d put it up for a laugh…… glad you like it though……:)
