Pink Stinks.........hand coloured silver gelatin photograph by

Having a bit of a play around with some old hand coloured photo’s. This disperate group of handcoloured images owe nothing to Adobe in any way shape or form. They were shot with an old SLR using B/W film…. ahh film…. and then processed and printed in a wet darkroom on to Iford multigrade satin paper. Then the photographs were tinted with Marshalls very fine transulent photo oil paints then scanned with my very nice HP H4050 Scanjet flatbed scanner.

The day after I took this photo…. the tree got chopped down… and it was in full bloom…. the saddest thing I ever saw….. sigh…..

I’m assuming this was an Australian image? How odd. In August of last year I took a series in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania where they are constructing a new Convention Center. And one of my images showed a fenced off area, piles of rubble, and a cement building on the other side of the lot which was also six stories high. Perhaps I came along a few days after they sawed down that tree ? Whoa, two images – almost identical – literally a world apart. The difference is, yours is striking, almost Asian in its delicate detail And the color palette is exquisite.

  • Hi Ted…. and thanks…. this was taken just out of Sydney in a suburb called Alexandria…. it’s on the way to the Airport and undergoing lots of redevelopment. Still it was such a shock that this beautiful flowering tree which was on the footpath mind you not in the demolishion yard….. was just sacrificed like that. I took some lovely infrared shots of this tree as well and when I went back the next day with colour film ….it was gone…… such a dreadful act against nature….. glad you like this shot…. the IR one is realy sparkly and pretty as well…… oh and my IR is true IR…. I only use film for things like that….. no Adobe products get near my interventions with nature……..:)

Had to chuckle at the start of the title. Hand colouring of images, very cool. Me Mah used to do that professionally. Have a shot of meself as a young twat, hand coloured shot. Must have been a laborious process.

  • Hi Col…. yes it’s a fiddly twiddly sort of a thing to do…. lots of women used to get employed to do it to b/w snapshots…. it was the go go thing before colour film was readily available….. it’s done with tiny bits of cotton wool wound onto toothpicks and with very fine sable brushes…. these last ones are very small photo’s being only 5×7 inches so they didn’t take all that long…. the Summer Roses took ages and ages though as its a very big print....20×24 inchs. Worth it though to get the effect….. :)

Funny you mention the cotton wool thing. Me Dah took up oil painting and he took up the hand-colouring idea of using cotton wool on a stick as one application method – would find little balls of coloured cotton wool all over the place. Still love the smell of turps and oil paints.

Scanned in the shot I found that me Mah did. Left it in it’s frame, hence the spectrum from the cool looking curved cover for the frame. Bit reluctant to pull the frame apart. Let’s see if I can post it here:

    OOps. Too big!

  • no deleteing will take place here….I LOVE it to bits…… those soft muted tones… this one looks a bit like it’s done with pencils…..special photo pencils from Marshalls… a bit like aquarelles really….. it’s so much fun to do …. if you like subtle pretty things I guess…. it’s a great shot as well…is it you?

I used to hand colour B&w with very fine brush and food colouring watered down, I still got some some where

  • hi Christine… yes I also have some around done with food colouring…. such bright rich colours….no latitude for error with food colouring though which in the end is why I like the oil paints so much… you can fiddle about with a bit more….. post some of yours here as well….. handcolouring is so special………:)

Every one is writing a book I’ll keep it short.Beautiful soft image and muted tones. Even makes urban decay attractive

  • thanks Andy…. the paint really gives it a different reading altogether….. I’m glad you like it……:)

It certainly does. And remember they had to cut done the tree. Look at the way it was blocking the view of the rubble

  • Cutting down the tree was just over the top…. the apartments they built there are ugly as sin and it really would not have taken that much to just work around the damned thing….crimes against nature is what it is…. I guess it still exists in a way in the photo although that is such a poor substitute
