The Devils do Austinmer by Juilee  Pryor

Posted on April 19, 2009

Well over the last couple of days I’ve been hosting a very cute two headed devil of a creature who goes by the double barreled moniker of Cedric and Beau…..such elegant and refined names who will hence forth to be known as the boys….. Rhana did warn me they would be nothing but trouble but they just looked so cute that I found that very hard to believe…..little did I know…. but I soon found out……

I had expected them to arrive before the easter break but the postie must be doing double time delivering all those lovely tax bonus cheques to everyone that the boys were somewhat delayed….. the first time I saw them was when I came home on Wednesday to find a strange but very inviting parcel waiting for me on the doorstep…..I rushed it inside and broke out my emergency bubble camera…..
.

.
Almost immediately the little dears proclaimed themselves totally tired out from such a long trip and demanded a nap…. and not on the fabulous 70’s retro brown cordrouy sofa or the miner’s lounge out the back…. nope these boys wanted to snuggle up for a little rest on my bed with shaggy ted and little yellow ted…. Ok Ok I thought just this once and after all they are guests so whatever…
.

.
After a refreshing little nap they emerged all happy and full of beans so I took them outside for a little stroll about the garden to scope out the wildlife. I’m not much of a gardener but I do like to grow things like vegies and suchlike. The boys were very impressed with my pumpkin patch and kind enough to not mention the exuberant tangle of undergrowth and other assorted foliage sprouting up luxuriantly everwhere else
.

.
Well it didn’t take long before another resident of my over grown back yard to emerge from the herb garden and sashay over to meet the boys…. so here they are mixing it up with Wilbur the Wild…he’s the garden’s live in personal attack wombat and so the lads and he all got on just splendidly…..no suprises there then…..
.

.
Well after a while Wilbur shuffled along to do his round of the garden beds… the snails around these parts are particularlly antsy this time of year and he has a full time job just keeping the little buggers in line. So the boys came over to help me with some work I was doing. We are having a gorgeous sunny autumn right now and while the sun was out I wanted to get a couple of cyanotypes exposed. So here are Cedric and Beau holding down the glass on the prints I was making…. and a great help they were too….
.

.
and here’s a scan of the little doilies I was making. This one is on it’s way back to Tassie now as a little memento of their great help in the making of these little prints..
.

.
Well it really was such a delightful sunny day and having gotten the work out of the way it really was time for a little stoll down to the beach. The boys assured me that they just loved the beach and a little sand in the fur would be no big deal so we set out for the local beach which is fortunately only a block away…. these guys have great teeth but very short legs. Before we left for the beach though they really needed to be kitted out with a little camera for some tourist type happy snapping of their own
.

.
…..and that little camera they are holding is a real camera just look at the shot they took before we left for the golden sands of Austi beach….
.

.
By now they had the hang of the littlest camera in my collection and were quietly wondering how they could slip in into their baggage for the rest of the journey. Anyhow we meandered off to the beach and sat down to let them get their bearings… shall we go out on to the deep rocky shelf or just go straight over to the rock pools to have a splash about…. the boys insisted on going right out on to the rock shelf even though the tide was coming in and the waves were really crashing in… they are Tasmanians after all and that means they are pretty darn tough…. not much frightens a Tassie devil ..or at least that’s what they told me…. here they are before we went out to check out the rocks and big waves….
.
They look pretty happy here before we wandered of to check out the wild bits of the local landscape…..but that sea is mighty deceptive….
.

.
Arghh this is nothing they say… what waves… my goodness …..the way you mainlanders carry on…..
.

.
Well they thought I was just being a total wuss about the savage seas and insisted on going right out on the rocky shelf to really check things out….. which of course was perhaps not a really good idea….coz as soon as they had settled them selves down for a bit of a happy snapping session on a nice warm rock there as a great big swell and…. oh my goodness I can’t believe it but immediately they were like … mauaaaahhhh PICK ME UP…. they really truly didn’t want to get their fur wet so I had to hoist them off the rock shelf and carry them away before the next big wave did exactly that….
.

.
So we headed back to the beautiful sandy beach to have a little sit down and catch out breaths. Before long we attracted a very curious crowd of onlookers who had never ever seen a two headed ball of fur and fury before….
.

.
Now I didn’t think it would be a tremendously good idea if the Cedric and Beau team of race around the world Redbubble Devils got eaten by rabid gulls before they had even left Austi so I introduced a couple of size eight and a half how would you like this up your feathery backsides to the equation and sure enough the flying rats made a quick escape…. a very sensible move too I can assure you…..and the boys were very much in agreement with this strategy…. quite made their day in fact….
.

.
Feeling very peased with the outcome of the gull v devil senario we strolled a bit further up the beach and checked out the rest of the beach… they loved the signage for example and wanted to see if they could make of with this as well….
.

.
I had to explain that it really would not be an even vaugely good idea to make off with the swim between the flags signs and infact they really truly did not want to get tangled up with the local lifeguards. Our beaches are very pretty down under but they can also be hugely dangerous and the consequences of not swimming between the flags or annoying the lifesavers or disregarding their instructions really didn’t bear thinking about…..
.

.
Well it had been pretty hot work hauling these curious visitors along the beach and I wanted to check out the ocean pools and try and intice these guys to come for a swim with me so we wandered along a bit futher were I like to splash about in the relative safety of these three gorgeous rook pools…
.

.
They were quite impressed by the local sea baths but not that impressed… they accompanied me up the walkway between the two big pools and I nearly convinced them to jump in with me… but not quite…..
.

.
But the last of the warm weather is on us and I won’t be swimming for much longer this season so I jumped in for a very quick swim while the boys minded my hat and thongs….
.

.
Ahhh that was just so nice! and even the cranky little furballs were so chilled out by the salty sea air that after my little dip we all went and sat on a nice warm rock for a bit to just take it all in…..
.

.
These guys have had the most wonderful day at the beach … I mean it’s always a success when you don’t get drowned by monster waves or eaten by rabid seagulls so they really were pretty happy and very very relaxed as I think you can tell from this shot…..
.

.
So we all meandered off back to mine and all there was left to do on this practically perfect day was sit in the shade with a cleansing ale and a nourishing lung biscuit and chat about old times and the next destination on their hectic globe trotting journey around the world….
.

.
Ahhh what a wonderful visit it’s been and such fun to have these little guys spend the day with me… so good infact I whipped up a tee shirt to commemorate the occasions…..

Absolutely magic Juilee!!! Glad to hear the boys aren’t giving you too much of a hard time, I did tell them they needed to be on their best behaviour or you would feed them to the rabid gulls ;)

Thanks for the backup there Juilee

I am a little jealous though… we have Australia’s coldest oceans down here in Tassie and to swim at this time of the year? HA! Not bloody likely! In fact, I didn’t get in past my knees all this past summer.

And is that Boags I see?? Hubby is suitably impressed ;) Did the boys have to twist your arm real hard to provide them with some nector from home?

P.S. sorry I forgot to mention that these two have kleptomaniac (sp?) tendencies… make sure you turn their pockets and their suitcases out before they leave ;)

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi Rhana…. and yes rabid gulls are a fact of life around these parts…. not to worry though the boys survived it all….. and the water is just gorgeous at the moment….still around 20 C at the minute…. mind you the other day was a totally stunning late autumn day …. and it’s already slipped into winter…. I’ve got leggings and knee high ugg boots and a scarf on today…. that swim with the boys really was … most likely…. my last swim for the season…..

and is Boags a good beer? …. hello does the sun rise in the eas?…. in fact its a hard call with my other favorite beer…. Cascade…. which is also a mighty fine Taswegian beer…. you guys do great beer even if your beaches are too cold to swim on all year round…..

and to tell you the truth…. I’m having trouble finding that little camera…. don’t know were it’s gone….damned devils……..:)

  • Juilee Pryor:

duh…. does the sun rise in the EAST….. hello I might need more beer….. sorry about that……:)

  • Marion Cullen

    Marion Cullen

They surely look like they have made themselves right at home already Julie, and you are showing them a wow of a time!
I’m about to send my two packing tomorrow, I shall miss the little blighters, but am also looking forward to some ‘quiet time’, that’s for sure.
Make sure you take your extra strength vitamins over the next couple a days, I can tell you, you’re gonna need them!

Have tonnes of fun you guys!!

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi Marion and I have to tell you that you totally inspired me…. having these little devils over to stay was a lot of fun…… I’m going to send them on and then lie down on the couch for a day or two….lol……:)

  • DragonFlyer

    DragonFlyer

Wow! Looks like they had a sensational time! And you sure lucked out with the weather for the beach… though I have to say that ‘cleansing ale’ looks mighty tempting from here… I’ll have to stock up on some for when they arrive for a visit here :)))

  • Juilee Pryor:

hey there DragonFlyer… and yes they had a lot of fun and so did I….. and don’t tell anyone but they had more than one cleansing ale…….:) just don’t tell them about the single malt you might have stashed in a high cupboard or whammo …. you’ll be out of scotch in flash….. have a really really good time with them when they get to yours…….:)

  • berndt2

    berndt2

very very cool stuff – they seem so well-behaved I’m having difficulty believing all the rumours of their devilish nature…. what a lot of fun!

  • Juilee Pryor:

hey there berndt2…. you know I can’t wait to see what the little buggers get up to with you…. arvo tea with the stars…. dinner with the Queen…. breaky with …. gaawd I can’t even imagine….. I’ll be watching out ….. and they will be feisty…. they have had the sea side and beer stop with me so they will be expecting caviar and champane from over there in the old dart……:)…or bacon sarneys and milky tea at the very least….. :))

  • janniev

    janniev

It looks and sounds like you are all having a whale of a time, Juilee, rabid gulls notwithstanding. I can’t believe you’re still swimming anywhere at this time of year, though! I think you might have spoilt them rotten, pity the next Host on the list! Thanks for posting this, it’s a great read. Enjoy the remainder of their stay.

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi there janniev… and thanks…. it’s been a warm autumn sofar although winter sailed intoday for sure…. the water is still warm though… mind you as soon as you step out of the water you freeze instantly….. but I’m a really wuss with the water so for me to be swimming…. it was a glorious day to be sure……:

  • Pene Stevens

    Pene Stevens

    awesome stuff !!! :)

may i ask what type of camera that is ????

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi pene and thanks heaps for reading it all…. and the funny little camera I was using is a 35mm compact fisheye lomo….. lots of fun and as it gives such a ‘bubble’ effect it’s kind of my official RB camera…. I did a journal a while back about meeting up with a whole bunch of Redbubblers and shot it with this funny little camera…. the journal and images went down really well so I’ve used it again for this RB mission….. here is a photo of it and I’ll repost the other journal so you can see the same style of image again….

I must get my kids on line to read this tomorrow, they will have a good giggle (and then want these devils to come stay with us for a while…)
thank you so much for the wonderful update on their travels…… (smiles)

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi Wendy and yes it is a bit like magic… so much fun to just let your hair down and be a bit silly with these little critters…. and also really nice to think it’s going to link lots of people up all around the world….. a little book would be lots of fun hey…..:)

  • Donna Adamski

    Donna Adamski

What great fun and an awesome devil tale! I can hardly wait until they come visit with me!! :)

  • Juilee Pryor:

hey there Donna… it has been loads of fun for sure…. they are going to be really really well travelled little devils by the time they get around to visiting everybody that’s for sure…. how fun….:)

  • georgiegirl

    georgiegirl

Wow… sounds like they (and you) had a fantastic time!! It sounds exhausting :D They’re so adorable, they’d get away with anything!! Nice that they didn’t try too hard to be mischievious (just for a change) ;D

You know? I reckon they were told you’d feed them to the sharks if they didn’t behave, let alone the rabid gulls. How else would they behave so well, apart from bribing them with pretty silver charms, long aromatic sticks and liquid amber?

Good to see you had them working for their stay… printing and gardening! They’ll think its all one big free ride otherwise :D

Watch that camera too… they might get a bit frisky that you want it back after ‘giving’ it to them!!

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi georgiegirl… and yes they had fun and so did I …. and yes that little camera might have to travel with them I think… it’s the perfect size…. also they dropped in the drink… opps…. and basically it’s kaput now…. not to worry… I have another one somewere…. and it just looks so cute with them…. :)

  • raindancerwoman

    raindancerwoman

:) i know I am gonna get lots of questions when I take them to Dollywood, so i will point at the shirt and say"check it out there" lol

  • Juilee Pryor:

that is just so cool raindancer… just point to the shirt and it’s kind of like having a press pass or somesuch thing….. good one……:)

  • Stuart Chapman

    Stuart Chapman

Well put together Juilee and a great read – glad to hear that they like the beach (although I live a bit further away than a block) – glad you all had fun together.

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi Stuart…. it was a lot of fun to have these guys around and to take them down to the beach…. they weren’t all that fussed about sand in the fur but they managed….. are you going to take your pair to the beach…. it must be spring over there so I’m sure it will be just like being back in Tassy……..:)

  • Pene Stevens

    Pene Stevens

I knew i’d seen that “bubble style” before – now that you mention it, i remember reading your journal entry with the “bubble” shots in it !!
    fantastic stuff !!! :)

  • Juilee Pryor:

thanks pene… it’s a funny little camera but somehow it’s just perfect for RB type things… just a bit of lomo lunacy really…:)

  • Jayca

    Jayca

I love the first shot, and the shot of them on the beach with your feet. :)
The first shot looks like you’re looking through a peephole in an apartment to see the package!!!! :)
Looks like the little guys had lots of fun with you, Juilee!!!! :)

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi Jayca and thanks heaps…. it was a lot of fun to do this…. silly but sweet…..:)

  • Jayca

    Jayca

I wanted to do it, too, but I don’t think I’ll be able to. Time, mostly. If the semester hadn’t suddenly decided to get super busy, and summer didn’t decide to start planning on being busy (lol), I’d do it. It looks like so much fun!!!!

  • Juilee Pryor:

ahh don’t worry about being busy at college…. you can rest when your dead…. have fun now while your able to……:)

  • Robert Knapman

    Robert Knapman

You funny thing you. I wish I was a two headed monster….too .)

  • flame7

Classic reading Julie!! Glad they had a good time!! LOL..

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi Kelly and thanks it was a lot of fun having the devils over for a stay…..:)

  • Geraldine Lefoe

    Geraldine Lefoe

Love your little lomo images plus story – had me right in there! Glad to see you gave the Taswegians a treat whilst at the beautiful Austi. Been travelling myself so missed all this

  • Juilee Pryor:

hi Geraldine and thanks heaps… it was a silly and fun thing to do to host these little critters for a while and how could I not take them down to Austi beach… it’s so beautiful there….. :)
