now I must confess I’m not crazy about ironing but I am crazy about Antarctica… and sometimes maybe just a little crazy… so when I was lucky enough to go there a while back I managed to convince a whole bunch of people to pose for me for this silly calendar…. and as you can see the exciting and fabulous sport of extreme ironing knows no bounds… every gender and race and age and particular type of faith can and is able to embrace the concept of extreme ironing….. so go you good thing you get that ironing board out to a crazy place near you and give it a go……:)

that’s one very well ironed pair of shorts….oh, the iron wasn’t plugged in….

  • ho ho Soxy I just put your reply in the wrong box…. so silly of me… anyway the iron not being plugged in is a technical thingy that doesn’t actually lose you any points in the actual playing of this sport… I’ve seen images of extreme ironers doing this in the most extreme locations you can imagine…. the only thing they all have in common is an iron and a smile… it’s just the perfect sport for me…..:)

Lovely Juilee. I remember reading your story about this trip when you infolded it out onto Redbubble for us. Amazing trip, amazing images, and this is one fantastic crazy collection.

I still snigger and think to myself sometimes when I see these. I wish I had been there, I would have done it naked LOL

  • hey there PP… and thanks hon…. I took down all my antarctia work as it was all put up in a long convoluted narrative that made no sense to anyone just stumbling over it… but I have so many just beautiful images left that have never been seen… I might put a few up from time to time maybe… and this calendar… look I did a whole heap of them for all the people on the cruise and they loved them to bits… it was one of those crazy storys you tell when you get home again… the story of the mad astralian artist who made all the crew strip of in the snow and ice to do some ironing… I mean who goes to a place like that to be regular….:)

and hey if we ever end up there at the same time… I’m holding you to that promise……:) your so on…..:))

ha not a likely senario sunshine but nice try…. and hey did you notice that everyone is ironing full on surfer duds….. the extremes… locations, sports, people are all full of such delicious ironies….. haha… ironies…. pun fully intended…. actually the captain of the ship asked me to come and have a little chat to him after I’d hijacked the passengers and crew for this little impromptu shoot… I was packing it thinking he was going to put me off at a nice iceberg somewhere… but infact he wanted to get his photo taken too….!!! loved that but in the end never got the chance… drats and all that…. still as you can see…. twas fun….:)

Now normally I HATE ironing. I have this principled stance that if an item of clothing needs ironing – I don’t buy it. But – what a coooool sport – AND better yet – being played in about my favourite place on earth (not that I’ve actually managed to get there yet – bummer!)
And to think you almost got to spend the next year hunting seals and penguins on your own private iceberg!
Did you know that if you hang your washing out on the line to dry in below 0 degrees celcius it freezes asap, and all you have to do is go out there with a rug beater and smash the ice off your clean laundry – and then fold and bring inside all nice and soft and dry?
I’m VERY impressed Juilee! Does your camera have a minimum operating temperature guide?

    K xx

  • hi ya dragonflyer… and I’m with you I’ll do almost anything to get out doing ironing… normally…. but being in this amazing mind blowing place is not normal… and every one is so bent on the serious side of travelling all that way that the devil in me came out… well when I wasn’t lying in snow drifts crying and being all over come with the amzingness of it all…. I had to laugh or I would have been crying the whole trip…. seriously…. and the camera’s …well I took a few… the digital I killed sliding down a massive ice bank with a 19 year old on my butt while it was still hanging around my neck… it went bang bang bang all the way down while I giggled and tryed not to wet my pants…. sheesh… it was so fun…. and camera and antarctica… I just wrapped what ever camera I was using in a towel or tee shirt when I got back on board and that was enough to draw all the condesnsation out of it… it was fine….. and I’d scarifice a camera to the gods anytime to go back again… mind blowing place no joke…. so amazing…. thanks…..:)

  • and you know what the best bit was…. every day the barman would take a zodiac out and chip some fresh ice off some random iceberg so I could have a little sliver in my scotch come six o’clock…. gawd I died and went to heaven with a bit of iceberg in my drinkypoos’s…. :)

I still think the Antarctica series deserves that book, as well.

  • honey we need to talk about it… I have the words in me but maybe I need some tough person to lock in me in a small room with no books and no beach and no redbubble and demand 1000 lovely words a day or no dinner… the words will out eventually … they are building up daily…. it will happen but today I had to get work into an exhibition and read some stuff about antony and cleopatra… .and you know dribble about….. :)
