Lighthouse and Harbour Flagstaff Hill Wollongong by

all these images are of the exquisite old lighthouse on Flagstaff Hill in Wollongong. All these images have been taken with some sort of film from Infrared to colour and black and white and even 120 film in a little Holga… they were taken over a period of about a year when I lived quite close to it and would get up some very early and go and watch the sun rise very near to it…

I love your photos of the lighthouse. :-)

  • hi there Helen… it’s all of the one lighthouse…. don’t really know why I was so fascinated by it… something romantica and mysterious about lighthouses I guess… I’m really glad you like this though…. thanks…..:)

Wonderful, Juilee. All the photos are great!!! So many different atmospheres and moods.
I like so much when photographers concentrate on a small aspect of life and then continue to observe for a longer period of time. You did a very good job. And a very good idea to take each photo with a different film. Fine statement for analogue quality.

cheers and a hug from rainy, stormy and ugly Germany

  • hi Thomas and thanks… I like to get a bit obsessed about one particular thing at a time and really think about it.. and kind of stalk it… like this lighthouse… I took the photo’s over a period of twelve months or so I guess with all sorts of cameras and film and really enjoyed… now if I never see it again… I’ll be OK with that… I feel as if I know it….

and hey rainy stormy weather can be wonderful for photo’s ….:) having said that it’s been really hot here and early this morning the light looked like molten metal spread thinly all over the sky… amazing although harsh on the old eyeballs…. :)

Lighthouses are so dammed difficult to capture and you really have added lots of atmosphere. I have been tryng to get something I am happy with in a similar setting (wind farm) Thanks for the inspiration,

  • hey thanks Boadicea.. you just have to be patient with some things and sneak up on them at regular intervals…. I’ve got lots of photo’s this lighthouse and I’m not sure I"ve used the best but it seems to work so good luck with your windfarm…. cheers…..:)

These are wonderful, Juilee. I have a bit of a thing about lighthouses – always have done, even before my mother told me that she named me after a character in a children’s book about a girl who lived in a lighthouse.
I obsessively photograph lighthouses every time I see one, but have never managed results like this. Beautiful!

  • thanks Megan… I too love Lighthouses… such a brave and caring thing to find in the dark… a beam of light to bring us to safety… and yes they are somewhat phallic but there are times when they just radiate something special…. and you were named for a little girl who lived in a lighthouse….?… how very very special…. :)

Yes, apparently I was. Unfortunately my mother can’t remember the name of the book, so I guess I’ll never find that girl. I was fascinated when I found that out, as I was always a bit of an odd little loner child, so it seemed so appropriate.
