Antennae: Taking me Home
This picture is about how I felt about finding myself in a place that defys discription. The play of light on this icy little island is contextulized by the tiny ship’s antennae barely visible in the front of the image. Shot with b/w infrared film with a very battered old SLR in a part of the world that seemed to shape shift around me. I could never really find the words to explain what happened to me emotionally when I was faced with such terrifyingly sublime sights. Words are just not adequate to the task of representing what became a search for the faces of the gods I could sense just out of view. Images like this start to come close to that desire. So this picture then is really about the search for the path that will take me home. To the place I want to be in …. in the light…. taking me home….

I have to say Juilee….. I devoured your words as much as this image. You have a way of taking your reader inside yourself and showing them the true depth of your feeling.

I’ll bleed over anything given the chance….... I want to take pictures of things that can’t really be seen ….only felt….. not for the faint of heart….. no wonder I’m a bit crazy sometimes…. oh well someone has to do it….
Bjørn Gjelsten
thanks for sharing with us…. your art, your words…
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Bjorn its such a relief to get some feedback…. I really try make images that mean something…..which usually means my serious photos get totally ignored….so thanks heaps for looking…....:) wish my keyboard could so those o’s with the line through them…. not to worry.

Juilee. There’s nothing wrong with being a bit crazy sometimes, it gives you more character! The words and the image together moved me so much, I was close to tears. Sometimes the path we walk is not the one we would have chosen, but who we are depends on how we face the challenges along the way. I wish you a safe journey along yours x
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Sue its great to get some feedback like yours…. this sort of work is not really popular and my writing tends to be a bit to raw sometimes…. to emotionally raw or something. So getting comments like yours is really encourageing. Thanks heaps for that and I can’t tell you how much it means.

Ethereal and scary all at the same time. Makes you think about how finite we are.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Patricia….. its a bit raw and I’m a bit personally exposed by this sort of thing but its really what I want to do. I really apprieciate your support.

Wow! Great shot – the landscape seems almost to be glowing, and I do like almost-stick-figure like shape of the antenna in the foreground
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks berndt2 glad you like it. I’ve been feeling a bit rubbed raw of late and this is whats coming out as a result.

Great grain! Nice bw
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks TriggerHappy…. I like a bit of grain…. was a bit anxious about the size of the grain in this but what the hell…..what you get is what you get and the location is a little far to pop back for a reshoot…..:)
TriggerHappy
Juilee, was this shot with a digital? The size of the grain adds to the character of the photo. I imagine it will look great in a larger format!
Juilee Pryor replied
no no and no I no touch the digital when I am doing infrared. A very battered old Olympus OM 1 with Kodak high speed infrared film developed in D-76. I like the digital for the pretty stuff that I don’t need to think about but for the stuff that I’m really into I always use film. Film is good. and yes these will be exhibition shots eventually some time this year and they will be very big and I imagine very powerful as well. heres hoping any how…..:)
