So Sorry Debbie
This picture of a lovely laughing child was taken some years ago now while I was driving out from Meekathara in the WA central desert on my way towards the Gun Barrel Highway. At a tiny camp called Wiluna I stopped to look for some art and come across this family sitting in their car in the shade. This child’s sweet face has stayed with me all this time but today, this momentus day, is the first time I’ve felt like I could display it. Little Debbie and her family are impoverished by anyones standard but they clearly have love and strong family bonds. This child represents what we that is we white Australians are saying sorry for. Sorry that we couldn’t see value in our fellow Australians. The first settlers here in this wide brown land. Sorry that we took little children away from their family and their country and people. Only a relatively short time ago this child and her mother would have fled at my approach fearing my whiteness and the dreadful things we whites perpetrated upon them in the name of the law.
So from the bottom of my heart Debbie I would like to say Sorry. Sorry Sorry indeed I am very sorry. And I hope that now we can all go on together in peace and trust and mutal respect. For all the little Debbie’s white and black and brown and pink and yellow lets all step forward together hand in hand and welcome whatever it is that comes next….....

beautiful beautiful child, and lovely thing that happened today in Australia. I’d like to see reparations to all wronged people everywhere, but then, who’s asking me.
Juilee Pryor replied
I think its a question we have to ask ourselves somehow…..
taji

Juilee Pryor replied

Woo Hoo for moving forward and evolving….. I can’t believe it took until 2008 but now its a time to heal and move into a more understanding future. It makes me cry while I write this. I can’t imagine the sort of relief that the stolen generations and those closely related to them must feel. I feel much more happy to be a white Australian today. Lets hope that we never make the same mistakes again.
Beautiful image by the way Juilee.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks jemimalovesbigted…. its a huge day hey….. and it feels good….:)
rochelle
Great photo. I absolutely agree with your comments. I spent the morning on the banks of the Torrens listening with many others to Rudd’s words and for the first time in a long time I felt proud in being an Australian.
Good day!!!
cheers rochelle
Juilee Pryor replied
good one rochelle…. I got up and watched in on the telly and that was petty cool ….. Rudd may not have the poetry of language of Keating and Whitlam etal but he meant it and that was apparent…. it was a good thing to witness.
Helene Kippert
It’s a promising start – lets hope we continue to acknowledge the damage and find ways to redress the balance. She’s lovely Juilee.

Lovely family and child, Juilee. Extremely touching work. I can’t think of one country anywhere on earth that shouldn’t be doing this, too. There aren’t enough days in the year for the US to get caught up.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks patricia…. its a start and that is sometimes the hardest place get too. worth it though.

MrsO
This has got to be one of the most beautiful photo’s I have ever seen.
It’s so Australian. The topic. The car. The clours. The simplicity. And that little girl – she’s just absolutely gorgeous. Her eyes and her smile are so alive. One of my dislikes of being a parent today is raising our children in a world of consumerism. I’m guilty of it. But look at this little girl – she wears minimal clothing, she has no ds games, x box, nintendo, dvd’s, computer and all the other crap we induldge in AND look how happy she is!!! I can’t wait to show my four children this beautiful beautiful photograph displaying such simplicity and happiness!!! Fantastic shot Juilee. Send Rudd a printed version.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks heaps MrsO for your lovely comments….. yes happiness is a state of mind and this little girl was really happy…. just to be there…. not a playstation or a mcdonals in sight …...wonderful.
docophoto
Thanks for your beautiful image Juilee and especially for your eloquent words. It is so important for those of us that know and have met our Koori community to be able to share a small part of our experience.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks docophoto….. when I went to speak to these folks they or rather the mum…. asked me two questions before they relaxed enough to let me take the photo…... firstly Are you a mum? yes I have 3 boys….OK
then she asked me Are you an artist? yes long time no hope for me love to paint….OK .
So I had to establish my credentials first before they let me chat to them… and thats fair enough to0. glad you like the photo….:)

Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Jessica…. it’s a really old photo but I’d made a print of it years ago and have had it pined up in the studio ever since….. she is just so sweet….and now is the time to say it ….:)

This is fantastic juilee, well done !
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Jase812 so glad you like it….:)
Jase812
It is brilliant ! just like your photography you always amaze me.
Juilee Pryor replied
:) thanks Jase812…maybe that’s because I don’t aim to please….rather I want to speak through my images about what I’m feeling and seeing…. which dosn’t always lead to being popular though :(
Jase812
And thats why I love your work, what you see is what you want us to see. Moments frozen, love it !
Jessica Tremp
actually this is making me want to pack my bags and drive around australia for a few months…you sometimes forget how beautiful your own country is and the people in it you’ve taken for granted
Juilee Pryor replied
jess just go and do it. the deserts in WA are soooo beautiful and the roads are great and the landscape is dreamy and red and wild…. I just love the desert to bits….. broken hill is pretty good too. this particular trip I bought some paintings to die for…. knock out stuff….. like you wouldn’t believe… I have three paintings that I got in Wiluna…above…. that were done by three sisters and I’d rather starve than sell them…....:0
Jessica Tremp
i’m really…really tempted…x
Rebs O
what a beautiful shot and great writing with it too – a beautiful girl, you can sense a happy family
Juilee Pryor replied

AQUALINA
Lovely shot, and some heartfelt sentiments expressed by all who have responded.
I have worked in the desert with the Aboriginal people for over 2 years, and it never ceases to amaze me that generally the few people who choose to work with them are people from overseas.
Australians need to get out of there comfort zones and put their retoric where their mouths are when it comes to the Aboriginal people.
The Aboriginals have little respect for people who dont interact with them on a deeper level of sharing, a level of intertwining of the social, emotional and spiritualities of all parties involved.
Living and working amongst them has taught me more about the nature of love, family and sacrifce than anything I have ever taught them.
Sometimes I think we need to lay down our lives in order to help others and it is only in this sacrifice that those in need can lower their reserve, anger and hurt and respond in a way that can bring about healing, for all involved.
Sorry is just the begining and is just a sentiment if sacrifice doesnt follow.
Juilee Pryor replied
Hi AQUALINA and thanks for your considered and heartfelt response to this very old photo… I guess there is no cut off point for the truth and that is what this image is about. That we are all human and what affects the least of us also affects all of us in more ways than we are often willing to acknowledge…..... its only one old photo but its from my heart so its a start.
Crowmanic
A brilliant photo … as you know … and I am impressed with your comment/description … the sentiment and the message … on behalf of what few Aboriginals I am able to re-present … thank you, and all the best in “the Cause” of this nation’s needed renewal. TC4N
PS: You may be interested in Sheila Smart’s photographs ?
Juilee Pryor replied
Hi there Crowmanic thanks heaps for your response to my photo of this lovely child and her mum. I followed the link and yes they are splendid images of some very handsome people. Thanks for that. As artists we have an obligation to the truth …in my opinion…... and this humble photo is my way of sharing my understanding that we are just one race….. the human race and that we are all equal and deserving of respect no matter what we look like or come from…... infact I sometimes think that the only reason we are all so different is because it amuses the gods….but in that difference is the genesis of greatness and wholeness.
Crowmanic
In what you say there is obviously truth, no dispute, yet I must add that not all birds, or cats, or ants are equal, nor the same, they maybe of the similar genesis, yet, there are marked different differences that cannot be eradicated by philosophy nor legislation … the differences remain, it is our challenge, to protect them, not just generalise… “we are the same” is not truth, and in Aboriginal societal context (originally) understanding the different Beings, helps in understanding the difference in humans.
I’ll leave it at that, and as I said, thx for the sharing… travel in peace, rather than pieces.
ADuDeWiDaCaMeRa
sensational great stuff and me sorry 2 my stepmum was stolen generation but she dont jump up and down about it she just got on with her life and brought up 2 great kids one of which is a australian legend in his chosen sport
they are a very photogenic race of people bueatifull and spontanous
go the blackfellas
Juilee Pryor replied
Hey thanks for the comment ADuDeWiDaCamMeRa….. my mother’s three older brothers were taken into care when she was just a little thing. It really screwed her up big time. The father had done a runner and the mum could only care for the baby…. my mum. But they were white so somehow it doesn’t count in the stats….. but I can have empathy for this situation as I know myself how it echo’s down the generations. Awful mentality and very damaging to people to lose your children. And yes I agree the aboriginal race can be a very beautiful one. But then there are beautiful souls and beautiful people in every race…...:)
niggle
this is such a great photo, you were in the right place at the right time, well done
Juilee Pryor replied
hey thanks niggle…. thats the whole thing to photography…. be there and probably have a camera….. glad you like it…
robotsdream
what a fabulous photo and the words to go with it bring tears to my eyes.
Juilee Pryor replied
gee thanks robotsdream…. glad you like it…. I love the face on this little girl… she’s just a little girl with her mum… and we have to all be able to relate to that…..so glad you like the image
paulevelin
touching and very strong work
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks paulevelin…. thanks for seeing the strength of this image…. humanity is something we need to be shown sometimes…. and this little girl and her mother are relaxed enough to be showing me the truth about themselves …and I am privileged enough to be able to share that moment here…...so glad you like it…...:)
alexa70
This is so Beautiful Juilee, this is what it is all about, Love, Strength and Family .
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks alexa… and yes no matter how the family is constructed… thats what it is all about…. from that comes love and strength…. thanks again for looking…...:)
Melanie Dooley
This is a glorious picture.
I used to live on Groote Eylandt – I saw the same lovely smiling faces.
When we stop imposing our own values on other people from other cultures, we can see their beauty.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Melanie….. I’ve always liked this picture…. the beauty is in what you see coming shining out of this little girls face…..it’s real and it’s utterly compelling to me….. humanity comes in all shapes and sizes…. sometimes I think we are all different just to amuse the gods…....so glad you like it…...:)
mithrandir9x
Nothing but sheer joy on this child’s face. Rare enough in any culture, but let’s be realistic. There is no innocence in any race or culture. Each in its own time has brought atrocities to another and on themselves. Your nation and mine (USA) have the parallax view of being relatively close in history to ours (and I would argue that we still continue.) The healing lies, not in dwelling in it, but in moving beyond it (as you lot seem to have done) and accepting each for who they are and not who we wish they were or could be. That being said I feel the need to echo Crowmaniac’s words… thanks for the sharing and travel in peace, rather than pieces.
Juilee Pryor replied
hey thanks for your comment on this picture mithrarndir9x and for taking the time to read some of the other comments. I guess from my point of view its about the idea of there being some latent equality contained with in the parameters of childhood and opportunity for all…... if we can organize our attitudes to difference so as to allow for all peoples to get a fair go then its up to the indivdual to grow into their own full potential. And that some how is expressed in the joyful face of this little girl. joy and love and desire for peace are common to all people…. as are all the negative emotions as well. ............thanks again for looking and also for seeing…...:)
mithrandir9x
The pleasure is mine!
Moshe Cohen
Juilee, this is wonderful image.
I realy agree with what you wrote, it is all the outcome of arrogance and prejudice.
Consider adding it to ART ACTION UNION – CREATIVE ACTIVISM group they have launched ANTI-RACISM CAMPAIGN.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Moshe…. its heart felt and it seems to come through in the image some how…... if only we could just all be a bit nicer to each other then the world really would be a better place….. and I’ll think about the Art Action suggestion..thanks for that as well
missheels
I love this image so much Juilee, well done. So happy to finally see the country moving forward too, and embracing the Indigenous culture so warmly. ‘Tis about time! My son is studying Australian history in his primary school class at present – and I am proud to say they have spent MUCH more time studying Indigenous culture and history than that of our white settlers. Hooray!!
Nelson Campbell
She is beautiful and this story brings tears to my eyes.

I’m sorry too, for all the injustices carried out in the name of “whatever”. And yes-a glorious picture, film still wins!
Juilee Pryor replied
hello darlin and thanks for resonating so well with little Debbie…. she’s a sweetie hey…..how could anyone be mean to her…..????
Tenee Attoh
This is wonderful, full of life and joy. Sometimes the past history of these people is so very sad, the children where removed from their families so they would mixed their race and become more acceptable. So sad this world , the injustices put upon a race. But hey this 2 shall change!!!!
Juilee Pryor replied
hello Tenee and thanks for your comment… sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you… I’m having some serious internet issues at the moment but I’m really pleased you have looked at this image…. and seen it for what it is…. cheers
juellie

Great capture and lovely words … :) Quite uplifting ….
Betsy Seeton
On second thought.. capture isn’t the right wording here.. it’s very captivating. It stirs the emotions the way good photography should…
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Betsy… this is one of my personal favourite images… little Debbie is a great reminder to us all of the need for simple humanity for all I think
Betsy Seeton
So right you are. I love your compassion… and it comes through the lens..
